Sometimes you can get away with it. Once i plugged an Adaptec MiniSCSI Plus (Parallel -> SCSI adaptor) into my LCIII, thinking it was a hunky-dory SCSI cable. The Mac wouldn't boot with it connected, but once i disconnected it it ran fine I still wouldn't reccommend it though.
