A torn cable is possible, but the most common cause of the "lights on, no display" problem is simply a poor flex cable connection. Try squeezing the right-hand edge of the display frame (or give the whole lid a gentle twist) and see if the display occasionally returns. If so, then simply pulling out the flex cable and reinserting it will likely fix it.
