The original compacts all used DRAM for main memory and video (and sound), so pulling out video data is marginally more involved than if there were dedicated VRAM. But the complexity of keeping track of horizontal and vertical sync doesn't disappear even if you have access to the video data in memory. Or maybe I don't understand what you have in mind?
