downloading torrents in OS X
I can't seem to figure out how to download torrents in OS 10.2, I installed Tomato Torrent but when I download a torrent nothing happens.

I've not used Tomato Torrent much (my favourite is Transmission but it's 10.4+ only) but when you open the torrent file in it, it *should* start downloading immediately. What exactly happens when you double click the .torrent file in the Finder?
When I double click the file it opens up a text document with all jibberies.
When I click on a toorent that I want to download it wants me to choose an application to open it with but it won't let me choose any of the clients I want like bittorrent, azerues or tomato cause they're not highlited.

How about if you open Tomato Torrent manually, then open the torrent file using File > Open?
It won't let me open it. I can see it on the desktop but it's not highlited. Also, after downloading and mounting Bittorrent and BitRocket it won't open the programs, I doubleclick the application then it starts bouncing in the dock and then nothing...

hmm wel you can try azureus but that really is a filthy ram hog it work in jaguar though http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
correction there is only azureus left
unless you want to go to gnutella but i doubt that
from what i remember azureus is pretty decent just make sure you have alot of ram to keep it happy it runs on java

Tomato Torrent 1.5b1 should run on 10.2...

I use utorrent on my Windows laptop, though, because it features port randomization and encodes the packets so they don't look like bittorrent packets to my ISP.

but he said tomato torrent isnt doing anything for him
he might be using a version that wont work in jag, i ran into that, i finally found a version that would work in jag. its been so long ago i cant remember the version it was ( i think tom said the right version to try)

Yup, that's the version of Tomato i have, the programs opens up but it won't let me choose any torrent I downloaded. And if i click on a torrent, shouldn't Tomato automaticly open ?

It should... but there may be a problem with OS X's file mapping. If you get info on a .torrent file, does Tomato Torrent show up in the "Open With" list? If not, try selecting it manually by choosing "Other..." in that list and then navigating to the application. You might need to enable "All Applications" in the popup box at the bottom of the dialogue. OS X should then associate that file with Tomato Torrent, so double clicking it should open the app.
Okay, I did what you said but still if I double click, tomato torrent opens but comes up with a dialog box with choices like "open torrent file" "open torrent url" etc. If I choose open torrent file it won't let me choose the file.

I'm using 10.2.8 I tried Azerues, it downloads okay, unpacks okay but when all is done and I double click the Icon.......nothing.

Bittorrent, Azureus, xTorrent. Bitrocket and Bits on Wheels, they all download and install fine but as soon as I want to open the application it bounces a few times on the dock and then nothing.
Tomato torrent is the only program that will open but won't let me download anything.

BTW what Mac are you running, if it can i would just install panther or tiger and be done with it. much more support for them then jag (which is becoming like OS 9
Bits on Wheels requires 10.3.9 and Xtorrent requires 10.4. I'm not sure about the others, but I guess they're going to have similar requirements.
azureus runs in jagwire
I'm running on a Blue/White G3/400 the whole idea about dowmloading torrents is to gt 10.4

isn't that sort of illegal, warez should not be discussed here. talking about torrent clients for jag is cool, but not if its to download software illegally.

Well torrent clients don't have that many other uses...
Yeh, I know there are a few legal files available as torrents, but 99.9% aren't. You could always try using a Windows box to download the torrent, it won't cause any problems to download it on a non-Mac.
emulators are legal the roms you need to run them arent thats th ekind of feleing i get from this thread
How much RAM do you have on your system? If you only have the bare minimum, I wouldn't doubt that some programs would just bounce and not open.
Additionally, have you actually copied the programs to your applications folder, or did you just drag them to the dock, then delete the disc image? Bad question, I know.... but I did that once with 10.1 I think. *eek*

G3/400, 640 Ram. Somehow i got Tomato torrent working, I installed firefox and if I click on a torrent it actualy let me choose tomato to open it. Still not sure why the other torrent clients won't work.
