A Math Coprocessor will not speed up I/O, Screen output or overall speed of the CPU. It will speed up applications that are math intensive like Quark, Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, Sound Machine, other multimedia manipulation software and even some games like Spectre VR. These programs are math heavy and the coprocessor would help out a lot in their operations. Without a math coprocessor, running the game Spectre VR would be slow unless you just run it on minimal colors and no shape shading. With the math coprocessor you can run Spectre VR with all the options on.
Otherwise, the Math Coprocessor will just sit there and do nothing while the CPU does the work. When the CPU runs into a routine involving advanced or complex math, it sends the routine to the Math Coprocessor to do the math for it. The CPU can still do basic math routines like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, while advanced math routines involving geometric and trigonometric functions are sent to the Math Coprocessor.
