PC to GS file delimma..HELP :P
Okay, here's my status:
Apple IIGs "Woz" with 5.25 & 3.50 drives.
PC Windows ME (fully blown)
PC Windows XP (no floppy)
Mac Performa 550 (MacOS 7.5)
I've got null-modem access but everything i transfer comes across as a "document" besides a few chosen files. Don't ask me why, i have no clue why it chooses.
I've got claris works and xmodem protocol.
I'm sure there is software out there but i need the quick and dirty of how it can be done.
Also, can i copy Apple II games on 5.25 to a GS on a 3.5? (Stability reasons).

Since you already have the cables what you need is this software: http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/ ADTPro will let you easily transfer disk images between your Mac/PC and the GS.
Is it disk images of 5.25 games you want to put on 3.5 disks? Or are you wanting to take 5.25 disks that you currently have and transfer them to 3.5? There are several disk images at the Asimov Archive of old DOS 3.3 games on 3.5disk images.

With a HD installed in the GS you can run GS OS 6 and then connect the IIgs to the Performa via the printer port and just localtalk to it and transfer files easily. You need atleast 1.25MB (256K built in and a full 1MB RAM card). GS OS 6 also supports making HFS partitions on the local HD and has drivers for the early Mac ROM'd CDROM drives.
Okay, i've been wanting to ask about this. It doesn't seem likely but i can just run ADTPro on the PC end with NO software on the other end and it will just "send" the copy of ADTPro (for the GS) over to it like magic?
I've got NO software on the Apple IIGS end to receive it.
As for the games, I've got a ton on old Apple II 5.25s. I was hoping to copy them to 3.5s (for stability reasons) with the IIGS and play them off 3.5s.
Well, there a few problems there.
1) I've got no GS hard drive. I have the cables and drive (on the mac) but i don't think my GS has the card to operate the hard drive (if one is needed).
2) I don't have GSOS 6, just a bunch of games from my old Apple II.
See, here's what i had "planned" to do:
Send Zterm over to the Mac via Hyperterm (PC) and ClarisWorks (Mac) BUT the Mac doesn't recognize the files as ANYTHING but just blank file types or documents (why, i don't know).
I was planning to format some 3.5 disks (with the Mac) and put GSOS onto them to sorta get "started" but i can't get Zterm going because of the mac problem (using OS7.5).
Plus i've got something called "image convert" and i know there are other programs out there (for the mac) to work but i haven't found them.
What would be cool would be a Mac program that would write GS "images" to diskette so i could just load them straight into the GS via the 3.5 drive.

I've went to a lot of other forums and got a lot of "theories" or answers that only work "under certain conditions" and i've been told this is the best forum to get answers.
I hope i was told right. So far, you guys have given better answers than anyone else but i'm still sorta stuck until i can figure out why the Mac doesn't recognize the files i send it from the PC. And GOD do i hate using Xmodem protocol....ick.
Actually ADTPro will help you transfer the Apple II client from the PC to the GS. In fact if you don't have a PRODOS disk ADTPro will bootstrap the GS from bare metal to a useable copy of the Apple II client. You can read the details of how to do it on the ADTPro page.
I use it all the time to transfer disk images from my Mac to my GS.

Suggestion: use ADT Pro to get MMGR (a.k.a. Modem MGR) to the Apple IIgs. This is a two step process: obtaining and bootstrapping ADT, then obtaining and transferring the MMGR disk image to the IIgs.
This will give you two protocols for file transfer: ADT Pro for disk images (very convenient) and ZModem for individual files. Just be warned, MMGR is a pain to use but it is the only reliable ZModem implementation that I've found.
I've never tried this, since I'm from the ADT days rather than the ADT Pro era, but you may be able to grab GS/OS 6.0.1 from Syndicomm's FTP site as 2IMG files and use ADT Pro to transfer the system software directly to 3.5" floppies on your Apple IIgs.
As for converting software from 5.25" floppies to 3.5" floppies:
If it is a ProDOS program, just try copying the files to the floppy.
If it is a DOS 3.3 program, there are versions of DOS 3.3 that allow you to place several 5.25" diskettes on one 3.5" diskette. You may want to check out the comp.sys.apple2 FAQ for information. Also, to my knowledge, comp.sys.apple2 is where the heart of the Apple II technical community hangs out.

Don't do this. You'll end up with resource fork problems. (Incidentally, you can do it without the hard drive and I am fairly certain that you can use generic CD-ROM drives with GS/OS.)
Again, i have to add that i have a generic Woz machine and i was led to believe (before) that it took a special card to make things like hard drives and CD-Roms happen on a IIGS.
I don't know about that, but you can't run GSOS on a ROM 00 machine... you need at least a ROM 01.
Mine is 01 i believe. I've actually got 2 GS machines, a standard and a Woz.

It is better to beat a thread to death so that everything anybody would need is mentioned (and saved in Googles cache) then to have the same topic come up again and again with only partial information.

I say thanks to Magnus. He was cool, he answered it, and didn't have be a big shot or an elitest over it. The rest of you, grow he hell up and stop pretending you're some elder Apple authority or you know the "depths" of forums. I was doing this stuff 20 years ago, probably before most of you knew what a forum was.

Your little breeding ground of elitist "wanna-be" scholars on the Apple is about the worst forum I've run into in the last 10 years. This place, according to your time-line, is not even a year old and you're using phrases like "long-time members".
Technically if YOU had actually "read" I wasn't the 1st person to be insulting here, II2II was by telling me to actually "read" the posts and instructing me on a bunch of crap that was totally unnecessary. He was showing off, anyone who's got any lineage knows it. If you wanna back your big-shot who are doing nothing but really stroking their egos, go for it.
But I've been in and out of the Apple world for over 20 years. It tends to breed elitist like yourselves who gang up on people who you "think" is new. I was assembling these machines, by hand, back in the 80s before people even thought of forums like this.
I came into ask a question about software, it turned into a "know it all fest" where half of the answers were spit balling instead of really direct answers. The least you people can do is just answer the question and then get on with your lives rather than run it into the ground with a bunch of "extra" useless info and advice that's completely pointless toward the original question.

Since there are often multiple solutions to any given problem, it's common for other members to add additional replies to a thread with different suggestions. While we're all thrilled that the first solution worked out for you, there may be other members with similar problems reading this and a different solution might work better for them. Claiming that II2II replied simply to "show off" his knowledge is preposterous. Everyone here is just trying to help and I'm sorry if you don't see it that way.

For what it's worth, I was offering the MMGR/Zmodem solution because it sounded like the original poster wanted something to transfer files rather than just disk images (ADTPro is a disk image utility). Unknown_K offered advice for transferring files, rather than disk images, too. Though you do have to be careful with his approach for the stated reason. And to be honest, I think that reason affects ProDOS 8 more than GS/OS.
As for the personal attacks, I'll take them with a grain of salt -- but will add a couple of things: don't take my behaviour as typical of all of the members on these forums.
