I'm sure you have choices, but I think you'll find that you don't have as much flexibility as you thought. Even a minimum configuration is likely to consume quite a bit more RAM than 3.x (or 2.2). There's no harm in giving it a shot, of course, so by all means try the experiment; just be prepared for disappointment.
