Need help with resources for flashing orinoco to gold Networking 4 posts Mar 1, 2008 — Mar 2, 2008
Yeah, I have searched everywhere for a decent solution to flash this Orinoco I have in my hand to gold (from silver) and all I see is the alchemy with Windows 98. I did it before, but I don't remember how I did it. maybe one of you that have done this a few times can help me? I just need the resources, or if anyone can put up the files (a lot of places I went to had dead links), I would greatly appreciate it. right now, I am trying to get windows 98 to recognize the card, and after an hour working with a fresh install, I have to COMPLETELY reinstall it. Not fun...

Can *ANYONE* help me with this? I have looked practically everywhere, but all the links are dead, and no one seems to have a definitive answer

Oh, and BTW, airport slot is out. I killed the slot on my emac. :-/

ur safest bet is to use a machine, like a pismo, to flash it with the airport updated. That's how I did mine btw

Don't bother. The *ONLY* difference is that Silver supports 64-bit WEP, and Gold supports both 64-bit and 128-bit WEP.

Both versions of WEP are so ridiculously insecure that there is no reason to choose 128-bit over 64-bit. Using an AirCrack type app, 128-bit WEP can be hacked in less than 10 minutes on a reasonably modern computer.

If you just want to prevent the average Joe from connecting, 64-bit WEP is fine. If you want real security, you need to use WPA2 (which is incompatible with 802.11b-only hardware.) Yes, even WPA-PSK has been cracked, although it takes noticeably longer than WEP.

Yeah, I just reluctantly sold my trusty old G3 iBook because it had become useless for wireless internet, because everywhere (including my own home network) uses WPA instead of WEP now. It's a shame original Airport cards can't support WPA.
