Try starting up without a disk (hit control-reset while the drive is spinning). You should get the "]" applesoft prompt.

Usually a bad disk will dump you into the monitor... I think bad memory or something wrong with the mobo would more likely result in random crap on the screen.

If you can't startup without a disk, you might try reseating all the socketed chips (very carefully).
