Cool. Compacts are fun as long as you don't get too ambitious about which operating system to run on it. You can go as high as 7.5.5 but any version of System 7 is so heavy it degrades performance too much on an 8mhz 68000 machine for the extra features to be worth it. System 6 runs very well on these, though.
A 68000 Mac with 4MB (max.) of RAM will be best served by plain vanilla System 6.0.8, leaving plenty of RAM space for applications, by System 7.1 if you are ambitious, or, if you wish to live dangerously, by a tarted-up 7.1.3 if also you have max. RAM.

it will be best served by my dark castle floppies
To me, putting 7.x on any machine that'll run 6.x is utter blasphemy. Old Macs are cheap. If you need to run System 7 for some unthinkable, completely unholy reason, buy a Quadra.
I love my classic II's!
Blasphemy or no, if you want to run a browser (however rarely), system 7 is a must. I enjoy downloading classic apps on a classic mac, and so one of my Pluses runs 7.0* to support MacLynx and MacWeb. It is a joy to watch those bits fly into the Mac (and with the low data rates the Plus can muster, you can almost count them out loud). To me, putting 7.x on any machine that'll run 6.x is utter blasphemy. I run 7.1 on IIci's and IIfx's, don't see anything wrong with that.
6.0.8 is great for anything 68030/16 and slower.

You guys are taking the fun out of this by taking me too seriously.
I'm a pre-System 7 zealot. If you guys want to run a browser, that's fine. Do it on your Quadra, or even your LC III. Run it on a MacTV if you insist on having a horrible experience. But leave the System 6 capable machines alone. Yes a IIfx will run 7.1 well, but it doesn't change the fact that every processor cycle that IIfx runs 7.1 code, it's crying on the inside. In fact, God kills a kitten, a puppy, AND a Nun every time you boot a IIfx into 7.x. I speak the truth.

Sure you can! Of course, the better option would be to sell it to me, as I'm looking for a dual floppied SE!
