Where is The Line that Is Verry Opisite Of Cold?
If one of the holders of the line can send me a disk/disc with all the stuff, I could host a server. Nice speedy 1.5 Mb/s upload speed, dedicated beige G3 running Mac OS 8 and AppleShare IP 5, I could add a "Line" to it.
(Extra bonus: both my internet connection and my server are on 1 hour UPS systems, and only twice in the past 6 years have we lost power for more than 1 hour; and I haven't lost my internet connection for more than 10 minutes since switching to cable.)

alright, preterhuman has been down for over a month. What is going on? Has anyone been able to get in touch with netfreak? I uploaded a file there about 3 months ago, and unfortunately, it's not in your archives, John.
can someone email him? I don't know how to contact him outside of his site.

ah, thanks. I will check it out later. I was looking at my server favorites in frogblast, I have 6 of them, and all of them can not connect for one reason or another.
So is preterhuman dead for good then, or will it be back someday? if the former, I think we should give it a proper funeral. It has served us all well...

Luckily I have nothing against leeching hehe, and knock on wood Comcast has yet to call me regarding the bandwidth usage. Although with their coming switch to a more protocol agnostic throttling system from their current bittorrent focused system (http://government.zdnet.com/?p=3740) I may eventually be penalized automatically for the high bandwidth consumption, we'll see...
I'll start going through my stuff more methodically as soon as I get this damn essay out of the way. My olde software is spread out across three different computers and a couple of Basilisk II HD images..Yes, I'd like to thank chris and paws for uploading software to the hotline!

Hey all, found this thread while doing a google search for my name
Preterhuman.net will be back up, but the big question is when. The server hardware is currently sitting on my kitchen floor as I had to pull it out of the DC. I was hoping to have another DC lined up for a quick move but unfortunately the other DC I had in mind seems to be going bankrupt. I'm still attempting to find a DC but most likely will require me to relocate the servers outside of the city I live in. I'm hoping to resolve this within 1-2 weeks.

heh... we are the only germans here. besides oliver aka macos from myoldmac... dunno what his name is here.
.Well i'm german, too and a 68k Mac fan for many years now, but haven't registered to this forum until recently because my english isn't that good. There isn't a better community for this kind of stuff IMHO, so i'll do my best
.And it's a great collection you have. Unfortunately, I never get more than 2K/sec when downloading (quite often less)..My server is still running 24/7: http://vcfa.890m.com/connect.html
So I contacted my college's residential networking department to inquiry about hosting the server on their network, I received a stern response stating that they do not want the server on their network due to copyright infringement concerns.
I now have to decide if I can accept leaving the server running at my house without me and thus with quite limited on hands support or if it would just be better to decommission the service. That is, unless I start getting donations to go towards a colocation bill (so far I have received no donations--if you do want to donate, just click the PayPal donate button at http://vcfa.890m.com, you can donate using either a credit card or a paypal account)... *sigh*

taken straight from http://www.preterhuman.netpreterhuman.net will be back!
Our servers are still currently down, but that doesn't mean they won't be online again. We are currently building a new collection of hardware to serve our sites and will then be looking into a suitable datacenter. If you would like to donate to assist our efforts, please contact plezica@gmail.com

I have gotten 10 GB of FTP space from a friend, How big is the Macintosh folder (The important working stuff) on the KDX server ftp://kdxvcfa.dyndns.ws/ ?
19G Macintosh
Hmm, I bet If I can gain access to it I might be able to trim it down a little. If I can get it to 10 GB, it will take around 26 days just downloading from the KDX server (At 4 KB/s), though there are spikes in speed and it goes to 10 KB at times. Though there is a problem... I don't think I have a computer that will be operational for that long in one sitting. If someone has the resources to get the files in one place where I can then go through and delete stuff (Things with lost resource forks, incomplete files, ect). I will see if I can get 19 GBs from my friend.
YES YES YES! Can't wait!Hey all, I have worked out decent pricing with a local datacenter and the server will be online again before January. I've already got the DNS and backup web server running out of Toronto so now its just a matter of putting the main box online here in BC.
Any updates? I got my PowerBook 150 on the web and have a lack of things to put on itwow I'm sorry, i'll definitely get on this asap when I get home, but as has been said there currently is unfortunately little I can do ...even ssh is not working.I just hope the mac itself hasn't finally kicked the bucket.p
.After quite a search through some chat logs I found kdxvcfa.dyndns.ws. Because preterhuman.net was down and I found kdxvcfa.dyndns.ws through preterhuman.net, I thought all hopes were lost, but haha, nope. I found this thread. [

only to discover that it had some kind of connection-refusing FTP service open among a few other things that look admin-related (okay, to save anybody curious a scan too, 20, 21, 80, 88 (HTTP thingy, password protected), 113, 548 and 3389 (yes, remote desktop, but again, password protected of course)). If an admin dislikes that I've noted the ports here, feel free to edit this.
I'm looking forward to these servers being back up again.
:b&w:
Also, can someone provide a description (or a link to one) of what these archives are, how big they are, etc to someone who might have space available but doesn't know where they'd stand legally if they mirrored this? I might have at least one place who might be able to do a batch download if you can convince them that the dreamhost account in question won't go *poof* one day

ueberlandowiki.net's vintage software services were permanently closed quite a while ago.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure why it went down again. I'll be home again
next week for christmas break at which point I'll run the AHT
overnight in a loop to see if it catches anything. It's running on a
old Powerbook whose keyboard has already gone and I fear that the rest
of it may now be going too. If AHT catches anything I'll likely need
to ask for that part to be donated (e.g. if it's RAM) or I'll just
need a donated server if it's anything serious (e.g. logic board). I'm
going to try my best to bring everything back up and in a stable state
as soon as possible but currently it isn't looking too promising.
Btw, it's interesting to see how many people use my services since now that it's down there's all sorts of people emailing me asking me what's up. And yet, not a single donation was given to me either by PayPal or credit card and somehow people expect me, a college student, to just pull money out of thin air to fix hardware issues. Depending on what AHT catches I /will/ need donations or the service isn't coming back.

Yeah, I know it's not my ISP because I still get the system update emails and at least last time I wasn't able to access any of the services locally over the LAN either. So I can only assume this is a hardware issue which I plan to confirm next week. I'll keep you guys updated...

You are spot on! I've given out many GBs of bandwidth for absolutely nothing, and now that the server is going south people are expecting me to fix it with the money I just happen to have floating around. The reality is, I've been sharing with people but they haven't been sharing with me. I hardly get any uploads contributed, and even though I clearly have a PayPal donate button on my archive's website which accepts not just PayPal but regular credit cards I've yet to receive any donations of any amount. You have to realize that offering these files for download is expensive, both in terms of bandwidth and in server resources. I've spent hundreds of dollars out of pocket to ensure that there is plenty of space for the archive files, and might have to spend a pretty penny to fix whatever is wrong with the server. The question is, how much do I have to give to this community before people give back?I keep telling people, you all gotta donate. If you really want this service to last, donate to the man! He has gotten NOTHING for his troubles.
I'd be extremely happy to donate, but I'm flat out broke, at the moment.![]()

He has a point crew. If he's running this thing, regardless of the contents of it, you're taking whatever you need from his server and offering nothing in return for his efforts. You could argue "nobody asked him to do this", but should it go under there will soon enough be complaints that "there's nowhere to find old Mac resources".
Take your pick.
Take your pick.
In the meantime, you should probably set up some ads on the main page, so you can get funds for the server. I'm not sure why you didn't think of that before. :-/If you don't want to donate, and possibly as a result see one of the few remaining sources for these vintage computing community files disappear then that's fine. Just remember that when you're looking for a utility for your compact mac and you can't find it....
Good idea. If you get money on a per hit basis you could rack up quite a bit of cash.In the meantime, you should probably set up some ads on the main page, so you can get funds for the server. Unfortunately I don't think any of the ad companies that do pay just by impressions will allow the ads to be displayed on a download page like that.
I don't think it's unreasonable for John to want a little bit in the way of donations to keep the resource running, especially because up to this point he's paid for everything out of his own pocket, and because everybody seems to expect it to be up and running like it was a given.
In the 1990s, people paid fairly hefty monthly sums to the operators of hotline servers for an account so they could upload and download as they wanted.

Ok, I've got the cash ready. In the next few days I gotta put the machine online on my home network and do a bunch of security updates and working on some of the code. I may also do a few additions to the archive and finish the search engine index as it is only around half complete. The last problem is booking a day off work to get it all set up at the DC.
I'll be removing the donate links on my site and putting advertisements up in certain areas. The big bandwidth killer for me was the text archive on the website but the only donations came from Hotline/KDX users. Figured I should try a different route as the donations over the past 7 years total something like $120.

If you need any help setting stuff up, count me in. If the server runs Mac OS it'll be a learning experience, but I do know how to use Linux.
I also know HTML/CSS (although I don't like it), PHP and C, so I can help with writing stuff if that helps.
Also, I PMed you a few URLs you might want to download into the archive directly - they definitely violate a few distribution rules, but since it's a vintage archive type thing you might appreciate them. Unless you already have them.

Haven't had the chance to boot up the server yet. Probably this weekend I'll do the updates and then try getting to the DC next weekend.
Server runs debian linux. Been using debian for about 10 years now. The secondary web server is a Mac Mini with debian linux, but that won't be going online for a while as it isn't required for operation. The DNS/mail and third web server is on a p4 laptop with openvz virtualization but that as well isn't required right away.

Haha you must have tried between the 1-2 hours after the domain was redirected and before I got KDX to actually work again.Well, it looks like the preterhuman site is almost back up. The front page now tells about the server, and the link to the hotline/kdx page is there. however, when I try to connect using KDX, I get a "remote host refused connection" error.
Soon, very soon...
Btw everyone, YES everything is back up. KDX is running, Hotline is running. The domain "preterhuman.net" is updated completely so use it for connecting.
That seems like a poor reason. I'm sure there's holes in Hotline and KDX that simply haven't been discovered due to their relative obscurity.Sorry, one of my early linux machines was hacked back in 1999/2000 due to FTP and I have not run it since.@netfreak: Any way for an FTP?
I had a buffer overflow in wu-ftpd. Root access, box starting port scanning and got canned by my ISP. FTP serves no purpose for me.That seems like a poor reason. Regarding the original question, I may consider some other protocols for the text archive but all of the antique software and whatnot I want to keep on Hotline/KDX only so I can keep an eye on who accesses it.
Apparently I am arriving in the middle of a long conversation. Are "we" back up? Could somebody PM me the details? I picked up an old LC from ebay, and it had some interesting old MIDI software that runs in system 6.0.7. I thought others might be interested...Hotline per user limit is 40k/sec. Global limit on the KDX server is 250k/sec. I might adjust it at some point but I'm not a fan of some of the auto downloaders on the Hotline protocol.Yay! A Blazing 40 KB/s! MUCH better than the other KDX server!
This also happens on the KDX server. The download speed quickly increases to 200 kb/s, the specified limit. It then drops gradually to below 10 kb/s. :-/I'm finding that out. Why do my downloads start at 50-70k/s but steadily dwindle down to 2k/s after a few minutes?
The speed of the Hotline/KDX is impacted by the surges of web traffic my server gets. I'm constantly hitting my maximum bandwidth as I am on a budget connection with a Cogent upstream. Since I make little to no money running it, I can't afford the connection it really needs.Because the server is likely inside of someone's house.I'm finding that out. Why do my downloads start at 50-70k/s but steadily dwindle down to 2k/s after a few minutes?
And no, it is not in my house. Here is a picture:

I think the answer to that question is rather obvious. Anyway, some good news. I emailed netfreak and probably next month I'll be sending him a hard drive, which he will copy the 'downloads' folder to from the server, and then that hard drive will be sent back to me. Yes, long live preterhuman! :b&w:
Will that go to MacHut and be accessible with FTP, or even better, HTTP? If so that'd be amazing.I think the answer to that question is rather obvious. Anyway, some good news. *possibly*. But do remember that Mac Hut is limited to 30 KB/s total for all connected users, so it won't be that amazing. Will that go to MacHut and be accessible with FTP, or even better, HTTP? My internet connection at the apartment has a 1.5 Mbps upload (192 KB/sec).
If I had some kind of bootstrap of files I would be willing to host a server. Maybe I'll even make a project of it - I've got a Quadra 950 doing nothing right now, and it's got a RAID of 4x9 GB SCSI drives, on a SCSI card. I can pop a bunch of RAM in there and have a rockin' 68K Hotline server.

yep, i might get the mirroring set up even sooner than I thought. I gotta skip a day of work pretty soon for some appointments so I'd have time to grab the hard drive from the datacenter, mirror it at home, then return it (long story, can't do the mirror at the datacenter).
in regards to that picture, the datacenter is in that building obviously haha
in regards to that picture, the datacenter is in that building obviously haha
Correct. It was easier putting the picture up on the web server at work. The datacenter is RacksterReally? I couldn't find any indication that Always On systems involves itself in anything other than UPS devices.in regards to that picture, the datacenter is in that building obviously haha
No problem. The whole reason I started running the server was for text files and getting all the rare and old software just sort of happened from running the Hotline server all these years.Indeed. Well, we all thank you for having the server. I myself have nabbed quite a few files from it.The datacenter is Rackster
Just a heads up files on my server will be offline for a while today as I do this at my house:
If it finishes before the datacenter staff leave, then I'll have it all back online. Otherwise it'll be sometime tomorrow around noon.
Code:
nfs:/mnt/usb_hd/elitep/server# tar czf /nfs/drive4/preterhuman_downloads.tar.gz downloads
Will that tar.gz file be online tomorrow too?Just a heads up files on my server will be offline for a while today as I do this at my house:

I thought about doing that but since I have to make the archive at my house onto my home file server, I'd have no way to get it back to the datacenter as the server file drive is quite full. Some weird hardware problem prevents more than one USB hard drive to be plugged into the server, and the files drive is already taking up that spot.
OK... So I had planned to take the hard drive back to the datacenter today but this morning I discovered that one or more of the investors for the datacenter are petitioning the courts to begin bankrupcy proceedings. At this time I've decided to hold off putting the drive back in as it contains quite a bit more data which I do not have backups of. I will also be doing backups of the data still on the server right now just in case. I'll see how this unfolds before deciding on the next course of action.
I can guarantee I will be back online should the DC shutdown, but I may have to spring for a dedicated server somewhere remote and have to upload the entire archive myself. I just don't want to have the DC close and not be able to get my colo gear out, because if that happens I'm going to drive a stolen truck through the front of the building to get my server. That sounds dangerously like the fate of another web site, The Mac Garden. 8-o
Actually i'd drive in, reverse out, then drive in again just to prove to them that you mean business. No chit chat, no fancy movie lines, just drive in, out, back in, get out, quietly walk up to your server, take it, back in the truck, reverse out and drive away.because if that happens I'm going to drive a stolen truck through the front of the building to get my server.
Take pics.
Their building alarm system is shared with the money counting/storage place next door so police response would be fast.
