Beige g3 new hard drive/new os9 install CD won't mount

I have a beige g3 266mhz desktop. I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled os 9.2.1. it will boot from the CD drive, but if I boot from the hard drive it won't mount cd's when inserted and the drive is not listed in the system profiler. any ideas?

Hrm, you mention that you reloaded OS 9. Perhaps the "Apple CD/DVD Driver" Extension is missing?

extension is there and enabled

I just installed a SCSI CD drive and it mounts just fine. Still no action on the IDE bus.

the new hard drive is a Quantum with the same jumper arrangement as the original Quantum, so I set them the same.

Just to rule it out I tried another CD drive, (completely not expecting it to work since the machine would boot from the cd just wouldn't mount.) and guess what... Problem Solved
