ibook g3 600 MHz problems

i recently acquired said ibook, and i am having a bit of trouble with it...

i tried using mac os x (whatever one was on it) but it would keep freezing at various places (at the gray screen w/apple, at the login screen, after logging in, etc). so i decided to try to install linux on it, and now nothing works. i can get so far into booting the install cd's, but i always end up with a kernel error (signal 11, if that means anything). the longer i leave the 'book off, the further i usually get in installing, so i figure it is some hardware problem. also of note is the fact that the time resets almost every time i start the laptop up.

has anyone any experience with this? i picked up the ibook off a friend for $150, so if i could salvage it, the great deal i got on it would be complete :-/

I'd think ram trouble. If you have trouble with two different OS's I'd say it's hardware. Since you have to format for linux, I'd say ram. See if you can run OS 9 on it and there's a free ram checker program. Somebody should be able to name the program.

I got the 'book up and running with debian linux, all i did was remove the extra ram. There was an extra 512 (i think) installed, and i remembered that OSX couldnt see it when i was checking out the specs before i bought the ibook. anyway i removed it, and while yellowdog and opensuse still gave me problems, debian installed almost without a hitch.

The guy i bought this off of is also sending me the OSX that came with the ibook, OSX 10.3 i believe. Ill probably install that if i can when it gets here, as linux on ppc is not all i want it to be :S one of the biggest things is that flash 9 won't work, so no youtube! :O
