The AppleDesign Powered Speakers are *great*.
They've got some bad rolloff above about 10k but that's because Macs at the time could only play back 22KHz samples, so anything higher than that coming from a Mac would have just been noise you wanted to filter out anyway.
I used mine at work connected to my OpenBSD machine until I replaced them with a 2.1 kludge of my own devising. Mine also have the power input jack broken, so I just cut the cord off and soldered it down to the pads on the PCB.
