Apple produced multiple versions of the AppleShare protocol running over AppleTalk. AppleShare server implementations have been made by many people, most notably Novell and Microsoft. Third party servers may not be as backwardly compatible as Apple's. Additionally, AppleShare isn't just about file servers -- it includes printer serving and application collaboration.
