Use of a hard disk may be possible depending on how the 5V and 12V outputs are distributed by the PSU. A report on the outputs would be useful. If there is a decent +12V output (~10W or ~1A), you should be able to use a 3.5" IDE/P-ATA disk made in the last couple of years -- they are fast and use little power. Or look at low power 2.5" drives with an adapter.
