can you give a brief or point me to a description of reseting the computer login and password

If it's running OS X, then see this page:

You need to have an OS X CD (it shouldn't matter which version, but the same version that is on the machine would be best). If you don't, there's a way to do it through single user mode... but I can't find the article off hand.
