I have one of those ethernet to Assante localtalk/ethernet adapters and there's some fine print somewhere that it's missing some automatic recognition thing or something on the ethernet side. (can't remember exactly). But this makes it incompatible with many routers.

You're probably thinking of the 10-vs-100Mb/s autodetect problem. Many newer routers won't slow down properly to work with older adapters. A solution is to get an old hub with dedicated 10Mb/s ports and insert it between the router and the Asante.
