Sounds like an analog board issue (described above) to me. I've seen the flakiest looking CRTs become usable again with the right repairs/replacements.

Indeed, a true classic Mac fan is never far from his soldering iron. The ones they make for computers at Radio Shack work well. I can also recommend Weller products--I've got an old soldering gun from them that's 40+ years old and still works.
