Just Got: Apple iMac G3/600mhz (Summer 2001)

Note: While SVP 4.5.1 has TDM support and will support most Digidesign products, it will not interface with Digidesign 001. (Digidesign changed configuration)

i wonder if theres a way to make it work with the digi 001..
it must work via asio???

i think they meant using DAE it doesnt support the digi 001..

pretty sure when it says it supports VST this is for *EFFECTS* only.. not vst 2.0 spec "instruments" plugins

then again -- i could be wrong -- because 4.5.1 supports rewire.. and rewire existed aroudn the time that vst 2.0 spec was created.. i would have to ask on the opcode users forum to be sure.

It's a good idea if you think it's a good idea.

Biggest power consumption element on that will be the tube itself, but I'm assuming you'll sleep that most of the time.

I know that many years have passed since the last comment, but I did not want to open a new topic to comment on some details of digi001 with os9 for clarification and details on the subject of TDM.

I recommend anyone with a Digi001 to use Protools Le 5.2 as the central system for everything, for mixing, recording and mastering.

Tc Spark XL I recommend it to be used as a protools appendix since Spark XL has hots for VST audio and VST instruments, which this editor allows you to sample or record solos in real time when you play a VST instrument like Arturia CS80, FM7, Pro-53 .

Using ¨direct connect¨ for TC Spark XL 2.7, we will be able to integrate the editor and all VST plugins in protools, similar to using rewire for reason.

I also recommend having reason 1.0 or 2.5, really good stable systems to apply more resources to protools additionally.

So in this way I have many virtual instruments available to record in audio with Pro Tools Le and yes, this is where the Digi001 wins the most when you do everything in audio and start to arrange an idea to create a song.

I have TC Spark XL 2.7, ProTools Le 5.2 and Reason 2.5 to do all the music and synthesis that I need the most.

I use Metasynth the most to create weird sounds and samples using software synthesis.

Don't go any further, because there are things that are really unstable for Digi001, their drivers also with OMS sometimes stop responding and Midi is better to use with 5-pin cables.

Very nice! I have a graphite Summer 2000 DV SE 500 that I tore down to a chassis and rebuilt a couple of years ago. Such a mint looking colour! This is when it had just gone back together.

Well, you could play some tunes and see if it sounds terrible, or take a flashlight to the grilles and peek.

Yep if heyre falling apart, the first time you play some fat tunes that push them to higher excursions they will start to crackle... The foam seems to just fall to pieces. I don't have a single iMac with two good speakers, which is a shame as they sounded great when they were new.

I was playing some old favorites on it last night.. blasted it to full volume, sounded good to me...  Quake 3 arena and Heavy Metal FAKK2..  I'll check it when I get home, didnt bring it in the shop today, think I might keep this one at home

That's an awesome looking Mac. I just caught a glance at this one in the town I live, but I'm A ) "not allowed" to buy any more old Macs (*grumble*) and B ) not about to pay £45 for it. But maybe £25...No!

Yah not bad!!!  What I really like about this unit is that it is SO quiet!  You can barely hear the HDD working, but other than that.......silence...

The airport card I put in it is garbage though... cant connnect to very many routers at all...

That's because the old AirPort card supports WEP or WPA only, and WPA is only under OS X. Most modern networks use WPA2 security.

Actually I am using an airport extreme router, and it has the ability to do WPA and WPA2 I believe.  But neither seem to work... Actually I had it working for about 10 minutes, then it disconnected, and I couldnt get it to even SEE any wifi..... maybe the airport died.. lol

Is your router outputting 802.11b? Lol, it doesn't do G or N.

I am pretty sure the airport extreme router does abgn... but maybe ill need to refresh myself on its specs... im bringing another airport card home tonight and ill try that

The Extreme does G; I'm quite sure of that. You could just have a dodgy connection/card. I've had a couple bad Airport cards over the years. I'll tell you, though, everything will seem easy compared to my hunting down a PCMCIA wireless card for my Lombard PowerBook. :O

Yeah, money wasn't the issue. They're still cheap. But there's a specific list of sorts that definitely works with Mac OS 9 and X. As you can imagine, it's actually not that long of a list. Also, drivers tend to be an issue. Luckily, I scored a Cisco card for like £3, but it was my second or third attempt. Here's a LEM article about PCMCIA and OS 9:

I have one of those that I use as an iTunes jukebox on 9.2.2 when it's not storming; got it the iSub and it plays music far louder than my neighborhood can handle-got a Summer 2000 iMac DV SE 500 Snow for the bedroom and as soon as I got the Graphite one an iSub I had to get the iSub for the DV SE Snow and now I just sit back and enjoy the music & casual gaming on the one, and those two things plus DVD movies on the third. Life really gets to be good sometimes; especially when the Sawtooth I just bought tries to draw power to a monitor I'm not using and couldn't hold up with the desks I have (one of those 17-inch Graphite CRT Studio Displays would collapse any and all of the desks I can set computers on...) and the iMac in question is the ultimate companion to the Quicksilver I set my user name to.

Welcome mate. I have a snow 600 I built from parts of about 5 different machines and a graphite 500 DV SE I took back to a bare chassis and CRT and rebuilt due to the internal plastics being splintered and demolished... Theyre definitely two of my favourite machines in the collection. They really are a timeless classic design, even if they are fairly fringe in their usefulness now. I have them set up currently side by side in my bedroom and the Snow gets used to crank tunes at night as the daily-driver G5 tower in the office needs it's own substation to run and leaving it on all night would probably become pricey in the power bill department. And I can stick the iMac in the loungeroom and it still looks just as cool as it did 15 years ago... still gets people talking too.

I'll one day get around to owning a QS but space is becoming a premium. lol

I have the 700 mhz graphite.  The best OS for these computers is 9.2.2.  I wish that they still maintained the Classilla project.  If they had, they'd really be fully capable, nice machines, really.  The sheer amount of free, completely usable abandonware available for 9.2.2 makes it worth having one on a desktop at home.  It sucks having to boot into Mac os X to run TenFourFox to use the modern web.  I just like to have one around just because these computers basically saved Apple in the early 90s when they were first introduced.  Not quite a collectors item, the way the compact 68ks are, but that could change in the future.

WEP only with Mac OS 9, and that is a limitation of the OS, not the card. There may be drivers to make it better but I don't know of them.

WPA2 Personal with OS 10.2.8 and at least 10.4.11. Probably all pre-Intel. Native.

October of 14.  I talked to Cameron Kaiser about this issue.  He said that while its still in production, its basically on the back-burner, because TenFourFox has been given top priority over it.

He's written a new JS engine for TFF, so now that that is in beta things should improve soon.
