Delicious tangerine!
I found this at the side of the road during the hard rubbish collection: ;D

It's a 266 mhz, the sticker on it says it came with an 8 gig hard disk and 32 megs (!!!) of RAM.
And I'm supposed to be shedding junk before I go overseas, not collecting it! Still, how I could I possibly resist? I think it might have been raining, so how long should I hang this bugger on the line for before I use it?
Oh, and it came with this "Pro Keyboard" from 2000, which, if it works, will soon be replacing the keyboard that came with my Mini!:

Nice conquest! Have you powered it on yet?
Nice find, IMO the tangerine was one of the most attractive iMac colours. If the iMac was soaking when you found it then it would probably be best to leave it somewhere warm and dry for at least a week to dry out. If there isn't any water visible on the interior components then maybe just give it a couple of days to be sure.
It's always good to get a freebie! :beige:

Very nice rescue!
It wasn't soaked - I think it had just been raining lightly, so I'll give it another couple of days before I switch it on.
On top of the refrigerator is a good place - you get the warmth from the coils to dry it slowly. I tend to give anything that's been out in the rain at least a week. Popping off the accessible panels helps, motherboard carrier if you can be bothered.
The two 21" CRTs I found sitting -in- the torrentially flooded gutter during a rainstorm are both working fine XD

Well, it works - has 8.6 on it. Was from a Real Estate agent, decommissioned in 2003. It actually feels faster than my dual core Mini so I can imagine how amazing the G3s were in their day. Like stepping back in time ;D
I admit it, the Tangerine is my favorite colour.
I like the original blue personally, but you can't have everything.
Whats the ram?
It's a series of microchips installed in the computer which provide fast access to currently loaded data.
Sorry, couldn't resist. ;D I don't actually know, I didn't bother to look when I had it on. It was fast so presumably more than the factory 32 megs.

So, whats it smell like? Seriously, I get macs and some smell good like a dryer sheet, others smell not so good
The iBook is known to have an intriguing fragrance like that of a sweaty 300 lb hairy man.So, whats it smell like? Seriously, I get macs and some smell good like a dryer sheet, others smell not so good![]()
A rather fruity bouquet, with raspberry and chocolate notes and just a hint of burley tobacco. Excellent now or can be cellared for up to 3 years. What's a dryer sheet? So, whats it smell like? Seriously, I get macs and some smell good like a dryer sheet, others smell not so good![]()
Dryer sheets are things you put in your dryer with your clothes to make them smell good.
Gosh, I've missed out on so much of life through not having a dryer. :`(
Damn! This thing flickered a couple of times when I was using it last night. The screen flicked off for a split second, though there was no loss of anything and I didn't need to restart. Does that mean it's going to blow up and kill me?
When my Bondi Blue started doing that the flyback transformer blew. Flickered for a few days and then **sizzle**

Mine's been doing that for the past couple of months. I'd say the flyback's on its way out.Damn! This thing flickered a couple of times when I was using it last night. It won't blow up and kill you, but when it goes out, it won't smell all that nice either.
Well, strictly speaking, there's no flyback in an LCD-based display, but there is a high-ish voltage transformer that can go south. It generally doesn't emit (many) malodorous fumes, though -- the transistors driving it typically fail first, preventing the transformer from cooking too long.Mine's been doing that for the past couple of months. Flickering of the backlight is generally the result of a crimped cable, a bad inverter, or a bad CCFL tube. It's not easy to determine which of these is the problem without some instrumentation, but here are some general guidelines:
1) A crimped cable will usually be sensitive to flexing of the display lid. So, if moving it around affects the flickering, then a crimped cable or other loose-connection type of problem is the cause.
2) If the backlight is somewhat dim when it's working (particularly if the light seems more yellow than white), then the CCFL tube itself has reached its end of life.
3) If neither 1) nor 2), then suspicion falls on the inverter. The intermittency may be due to something as simple as the fact that it got wet, and some conductive residue remains. Or, it could be more serious, such as failing insulation in the CCFL wiring, or in the inverter's transformer. If you hear gentle (or loud) sizzling sounds, then a failure in this neck of the woods is likely.
Aw bum...My first real conquest too.
Uh, Tom, since when were we talking about LCDs?

LCD's in a CRT discussion.
I sentence you to a year of WindowsME.
That'll learn ya.

He probably thought it was an iBook - (I wish!)
