Classic Rig For Old School Gaming Games 6 posts Aug 29, 2008 — Sep 6, 2008
Hey all!

I have been a long time lurker and now have something to ask!!

This may or may not have been discussed before but I will pose the question: What machine do you guys use for playing older Classic games?

I have a Motorola StarMax 4000 with a Sonnet G3/300 upgrade and 96MB RAM in it. I dusted it off the other day, loaded 9.1 on it and added a 20GB Hard drive.

I found in my box of goodies, 2 Creative Labs Monster II Voodoo2 cards (12MB) and installed them in SLI mode.

Now I am enjoying some Old School Unreal and Future Cop. MDK and Diablo seem to play well too!

So.....what are you all gaming on?

I've a PPC 9600 G3 520Mhz/1.5GB/80GB with Radeon 7000 and Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, great machine! Unreal still looks amazingly good - especially the first level, oh and the music.

Another good choice IMO would be a 6500 with Voodoo 2 card installed, G3 preferable. A beige G3 would be fine too.

For 68K gaming, an LC630 is a good choice (crap case, but Marathon is somewhat hardware accelerated!).

68k? LC475, 36MB/1GB/8x CD-ROM/OS 8.1

PowerPC? iMac 333 160/40GB/OS 9.2.2 (Classic mode sucks - when I want to play games I always properly boot into OS 9)

i got a 9600 too.

G3 530mhz/53mhz bus

768MB RAM

4x9GB U2W SCSI disks - two 2 disk RAID 0s

1x18GB UW SCSI

Radeon 9200

SCSI DVD drive

its running 9.2.2 like a charm. original UT and descent 3 FTW :D

for ppc gaming, i use the g3 in my signature. For 68k, I use my Quadra 950 with 88MB of ram.
