G3 upgrade and Gauge Pro

G3 upgrade and Gauge Pro PowerPC 5 posts Sep 3, 2008 — Sep 4, 2008
I have a G3 upgrade in my 9500 and Gauge pro is reporting 300 mhz G3 (correct) 1MB backside L2 (yup) and... 512k motherboard based L3 ??? I can't disable the motherboard cache but I thought the crescendo extension would do that. Is this good/bad/indifferent or is Gauge Pro wrong?

Is your upgrade made by NewerTech (a MAXpowr)? If that is so and you are using the MAXpowr CP and extension, there is provision in the CP to ignore (if it cannot be physically removed) on-board cache.

However, if you are asking GaugePRO to report about a non-NewerTech G3 card, you will have to forgive it if it gets confused, or even tells you porkies, about someone else's product. The necessary mechanics for accurate question-and-answer may just not be there. Rest assured, however, that reports of L3 cache on the MLB of a 9500 are grossly exaggerated.

Thats what I figured, the card is a Sonnet not Maxpowr. Still at least Gauge Pro got the CPU speed right, unlike..ahem..Apple system Profiler.

What's Profiler say?

It varies, sometimes 320mhz, 346mhz and even 380mhz. Gauge Pro, Metronome and Tattle tech all say 300.9mhz
