I don't really have intentions of pushing the HD past maybe 6GB, but that would rule out SCSI disk mode; crucial if the computer doesn't have a CD drive.

Or, you could go with as big a hard disk as you could find, and use an external CD drive for those presumably infrequent occasions when you'd have wanted to use SCSI disk mode. You'd likely want a burner in any case, and since internal burners for the 3400 are extremely rare and expensive, you'd want an external CD drive for that reason alone.

Just a thought.
