The PCI box for 3400?

The PCI box for 3400? Hardware 6 posts Nov 6, 2008 — Nov 8, 2008
Didn't know where to file this under but I was thinking about the PB 3400c...

Back in it's day it was an industrial beast (touted the "fastest" laptop on the planet with a big pricetag to boot). I vaguely recall that there was a PCMCIA module that was hooked up to a box where you can plug in PCI cards...YEA serious.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd just like to see if anyone had actually bought one and how it all worked out (like could a badass PCI graphics card be put into that box?).

Magma made one. I've seen things about them online like this.

They show up on ebay occasionally. The PCI-PCI expansion boxes seem more common.

So those PCI-PCI expansion boxes are common? Was the 3400 the only Powerbook that was capable of such an expansion option? This is friggin' awesome!

Magma answered my questions...nifty useful tools!

The Magma expansion chassis was compatible with any Mac with a PCMCIA or PCI slot. In the old days, I believe they made Nubus expansion chassis too.

Expansion chassis are very uncommon. At least one company, possibly Magma, advertised one for the SE and Portable, so anything post SE/II was expandable via an external box. Assuming that you can find the bits.
