Thread
Hey, it's been a long while since I've had a real conquest. This is gonna be my first conquest of 2009 and my first Freecycle conquest. I had put a post up on freecycle saying I was after a vintage Mac. Lo and behold I get a reply from somebody in a town about 5 - 10 miles away, saying that she and her husband run a business and they retired a Mac that was used from about 1998 - 2003, and I was free to take it. She also said that they had older Macs in the garage and I was free to take any or all of them. I called to arrange a time and she was telling me that she was surprised they even still had them. Score!!!!
W00t! My guess is you're going to score a Beige G3 - and good luck with the older gear too!
He might get an iMac too.
I feel really strongly that I'll get a late Beige PowerPC machine. If it's an iMac I won't bother grabbing it, as I only need about 2 machines to boost my collection. I'm heading over there in a few minutes and I'll be sure to get back to you guys about the big(?) score!
Dammit... That's what I get for not watching Freecycle often enough. (Or posting often enough.) Lemme know if you have any spares that you might want to trade for some of my spares.
edit: My offer is because we're local to each other, in case you were confused.

So what was the result of the raiding of the Garage?
Well...
1 Macintosh SE 4MB 800k, upgraded hard drive to 30MB, very yellowed but runs quiet and smooth, System 6.0.7 and Finder 6.1.6b12 ( :?: ) Also, I thought I got something really good in the PDS slot but it had been emptied (it had a Radius Two Page Display cover)
and (you can't win them all)
1 Performa 6400/200, 136MB, 3GB HD and Mac OS 8.6 *sigh*
Good haul, I guess, it was worth the trip out there!
Also the Performa came with a booklet of CDs including Performa System Software, and Norton Utilities, which sorta rescued the zip disk that was failing (it still won't boot Mac Plus).
EDIT: In case this is a rare Finder I will be sharing it.

Ah well. The performa is a nice machine and the SE is a nice compact. Too bad no G3 but it was free.
Maybe you can make a good server out of the 6400.

The 6400's are hard to get into, but I really like their case style. It has a built in sub too.
That explains the deep boom of a startup chime it has.The 6400's are hard to get into, but I really like their case style. It has a built in sub too.
The 6400/6500 machines are wonderful. The case isn't that hard to get into. :-/
Nowt wrong with a free 6400!
Too bad they did not have better RAM expansion. 2 slots with a max of 128 MB I believe.
Unless you put a $20 Sonnet 7200 G3 PCI upgrade card in it [

136MB. You were close :beige:Too bad they did not have better RAM expansion. 2 slots with a max of 128 MB I believe.
Hells yeah! [Sonnet still sells cards?
] ]'> For sixty clams, you can have a G4 even. Now that second slot - hmmm. Tempo Trio or better video? Decisions decisions.
If you can live with 136MB of RAM and a G3, the L2 cache slot upgrades can still be rustled up cheap on the bay, leaving you two PCI slots to play with.
136MB should be adequate for a MacOS 9 machine, unless you're working on huge Photoshop/video files. In which case, use a different machine.
Lawd .... a 9500 with six of those G4s, and the appropriate kernel/driver hacks ....
Actually, I believe this one has the cahche card. One PCI slot is filled with an ethernet card that won't be used. I have a spare Rage128 16MB card which should speed this guy up more. I might consider the G3 if it's toggle-able.
Are you referring to the L2 slot G3? What do you mean by toggle-able? You mean you want to be able to switch between using the G3 and the original cache? Why? The G3 upgrade has a larger cache onboard than the original cache SIMM.
I meant is it toggle-able between the G3 and the 603 processors, not caches.
I guess I don't understand how ever in the world a situation would arise where you would prefer the 603 to the G3??
^^ Ditto. Why would you want to?
And the answer AFAIK is no - the only "toggle" available is to pull the upgrade, unless you get really fancy with some kind of dual socket/multi-pole switch kludge

Does this actually work in a 6400? I've heard it mooted but never actually read a success story.Unless you put a $20 Sonnet 7200 G3 PCI upgrade card in it [] ]'>
Ain't it amazing what using the search will reveal?
But given the card works in at least one other off-label machine, I'd say why not?
Unfortunately the thread peters out about there - looks like Mike never completed that test - hint hint Mike. All RAM is recognized.all the RAM both on the motherboard and on the upgrade?? You wouldn't happen to have a 6500 you could try that out on would you?The Crescendo/7200 works in a 7500! DIMMs and all. It's all operative. Graphics appear to be accelerated too.
I have both a 6400 and a 6500 I can test it on.
