Got a pic of the expansion port on the 1400? It sounds like it could be an external video card...you'll need a PowerBook external video adaptor to plug an external monitor into it...I've got one of those cards on my 1400, despite the fact that it only does 8 bit video at 640x480 or 800x600, or 4 bit video at 1024x768, its quite neat.
