I have hated the conversion, as I used to buy actual software at these places. I remember browsing Babbages in the 1990s, looking at the latest from Microsoft, Broderbund, and the other great developers. My mom bought me After Dark 3 on CD-ROM there in 1996!
At least the closeouts on older software were pretty good at EB (when it was still Electronics Boutique) when they went to the all-video game format. I snagged Publish It Easy for Mac for $5 at the Pittsburgh International Airport store in 2000.
There are tons of Gamestop stores around here, including two that are within a mile of each other. One was a Funco and the other an EB. It's a shame they don't sell software anymore.
My personal favorite store was Egghead Software. While the other kids went to Toys R Us when they wanted to shop I was at Egghead, browsing the latest software and trying out demos on the LC III or the HP (I believe it was a Vectra of some sort) they had in the store. I almost cried when Egghead closed and went online only, as it was one of my favorite childhood memories. I still have a shopping bag from Egghead somewhere.
Speaking of software conquests, I just snagged a complete Excel 3 with the newer-style disks. It will be on its way in a few days so I can finally upgrade from 2.2 on my LC.
