Can you connect a hard drive to the second ata plug on the optical drive cable?
I used to on my graphite. Just make sure the jumpers are set correctly. The bus is slower, so don't boot from that drive.

I wasn't I was going to use it as part of server storage. I assume that cable is slave right?

Yes. The Optical drive will be the master on that bus.

Well I just threw in a 27GB WD on there and it worked without a hitch, even without jumpers!

Thanks for the reassurance guys. I tried this before and it didn't work but I found out the cable was bad.

Update...

Success! I have two hard drives now on the optical drive ata bus.
