In case you haven't noticed, we've upgraded the forums to phpBB3. Quite a lot has changed, so feel free to have a look around and see what's new. There could well be bugs cropping up with the new system, so please report them in the Bug Tracker:

The old forum archive is offline for the moment (I needed the disk space for the upgrade), but I'll try and get it back online soon.
Cheers all,

Quite possibly. I'll look into having the option to change it on a user by user basis. I have to say, I actually prefer it now that I've got used to it. The (mostly) irrelevant details are kept out of the way on the right hand side, letting the main body of the post take precedence. Can this not be changed? I've never seen a forum with the user info on the right. The username on the right is going to mess me up for a while. I'll manage.![]()
Unfortunately not, themes from phpBB2 aren't compatible with the new system. This is awful, sorry. Can you add the old design as a theme?
Actually, you can add what is called the "Subsilver2" theme, which looks just like the old theme and it is compatible with phpBB3. See thread here.I just registered there and was able to choose Subsilver2 which looks almost like the old style with the profiles on the left.Unfortunately not, themes from phpBB2 aren't compatible with the new system. This is awful, sorry. My apologies to the admins, and I don't mean to sound rude, but I really don't like the new forum layout. Maybe it's just me, I have difficulties adjusting to something new. But...is there some sort of option that allows us to view the forum layout the way it was before?

Woah, not so sure about this new layout myself. It doesn't seem to render properly in older Mac browsers such as iCab, which is a big downer in my opinion since this is an old Mac forum. Although, I've never been happy with the appearance of the forum since the Great Crash a couple of years ago - I thought that original OS 7/8 style was perfect.
The new style will probably grow on me with time but I'm definitely in support of a retro Mac OS theme for the future.

You know, I was thinking the same thing right after I posted my post, MacMan. I'm wondering if this is only temporary as the default since the forum was just upgraded today. I wonder how much more flexible phpBB3 is when it comes to theming. I'd definitely love to see a more "System 6/7" look to coincide with the 68KMLA. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
You can get to your PMs through the link in the light blue box at the top of the page – it will say something like "x new messages". As for posts, what do you mean? If you're looking for a specific user's posts, go to their profile and click the link that says "Search user’s posts" in the bottom right hand pane.Where's the link to look at/post PM's?
Woah, this is new. I suppose this'll take a little getting used to, but yay for upgrades! Maybe some kind-hearted soul will finally re-make a Paltinum theme for the forums now that we've finally upgraded
But cheers to the admins for a seemingly flawless update, lookin' good fellas!
I do love the new logo

Has anyone tried this on OS 9 with IE5 and 800 x 600 resolution yet to see if it works?
I too think we should consider adopting a more System 7 feel to this forum. It looks nice and modern as is but there are some things I'd like to see change:
1. Replies with just a box and not clicking on a "post reply" box. (The old layout had this).
2. Names on the left. It makes more sense since English, the language of this forum, is read from left to right.

I suspect that it would work just fine under Netscape 7 or Wamcom. But seeing as IE5 has problems with everything...Yes, the names on the right are ridiculous. And no, I wouldn't imagine this would transfer well to an old browser as it is a CSS based layout! I don't feel like the target audience of these forums were considered. What was wrong with phpBB2 anyway?
TL would have access to the actual data, but I suspect that 90% or more of us browse the forums with firefox 2 or an equivalently capable browser.
It hasn't seriously been usable on an OS7/8/9 Mac, especially 68k 7/8 Macs since we were running Snitz, back in like 2004.
As for the thing about reading left to right -- I'd say it makes more sense this way, because the most important part of each post should be just that, the content of the post itself. Why should I waste time reading 'Scott Baret' 30 times each page?

Yes. I don't want to be hostile. I just want the normal theme back. I know it can be done, so I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks. It should be remembered that no one here is trying to be hostile, etc. -- its a freakin internet forum about old macs, its not the end of the world. Many of just simply prefer the older theme on a site we view many times a day! :beige:
AHHH! CHANGE!! Change is evils and we fears it!!
No, I'm liking this theme more and more as I use it. Aesthetically I think it's an improvement. (10.3.9, FF2) I too thanks and congratulate Tom on the successful (technically at least
) transition.
However, compatibility with older browsers and older machines is a serious issue, and IMHO one that ought to be addressed. Whatever "90%" of us are using, blocking 10% or whatever is not acceptable - you know, considering this the 68kMLA and all. :
A text-only theme would be great for the really retro amongst us, if possible.
(Oooh, I like that the smilie appears at the cursor rather than the end of the post - much more sensible)
No srsly, what's a heirarchy?

I don't exactly have anything against the new phpBB3 theme, but more about how it compares to what was used previsouly. I would much prefer to have a theme similar to the old one, but as has been mentioned, a System 7 type theme would be much more appropriate.
I know moving the poster details to the left hand side is possible because it has been done on http://amibay.com/.
I think it is much better having such information at the left, because it is easier to find out who wrote something, before it is read. It is usually important to know who wrote a post.
If we do not get a new 'older' type theme, could the colours at least be modified on this one? Having everything blue is a little bit boring, especially when I am reading the forum in a room which has blue carpet, blue walls and a blue mousemat
The new logo is good, but the apple logo should have a bit more colour.

I agree that this default theme is a bit icky, but that may well be down to personal taste rather than functionality. It would be nice to have a bare-ass simple theme... My only real niggle so far is that external links no longer open in a new tab/window.
Edit: I notice I now have a title under my avatar, so I'll quit with the complaints now and just revel in my new-found titularity.

Just an FYI Bunsen, that was sometime in 2007Re: The 68kMLA Bug Tracker

Just an FYI: The forums seem to work great in MSIE 5 under OS 9.1. Ditto for iCab under the same. Great job guys!
For the record, here's the new layout in MSIE 5 under OS 9.1, and iCab 3 under the same. In short, iCab 3 works okay, and MSIE 5 fails epically
I for one prefer having the user info on the right... as others have stated, it puts the emphasis on the content. Now we just need to put a 4-line limit on sigs.
I really don't know if allowing images in posts is a good thing... I suppose that can be turned off on an individual basis though?
I really don't know if allowing images in posts is a good thing... I suppose that can be turned off on an individual basis though?
I believe it kills the validity of the code, since the target="_blank" attribute isn't part of the XHTML standard – hence it wasn't included in phpBB3 by default. Because of that, it's kind of gone out of fashion in modern site coding. To be honest, I always hold command when clicking a link (to get Safari to open it in a new tab rather than in a new window) so I hadn't noticed the difference. One other thing that I've noticed that occurs here but didn't on the old layout is that links now open in the same window/tab as the forums. Any ideas on how to fix this? I loved that they opened in a new window.
That doesn't seem to be an option – but I've disabled the use of images and smilies in signatures, since there's really no need for those. Now we just need to put a 4-line limit on sigs.
Yep, you can turn it off in your User Control Panel > Board preferences > Edit display settings. Hence why I decided to leave it on by default.I really don't know if allowing images in posts is a good thing... I suppose that can be turned off on an individual basis though?
I believe that's the idea! All the information in the right hand bar is extra information that typically just gets in the way of the actual content of the posts – well, aside from the poster's username! But that is listed on the left hand side at the top of the post as well. Also the contacts on the right is weird. I dont read that way.
I quit like it myself, and don't get what the big deal is. You visit a forum for the content, not to see the framing of the forum or the location of the user data and avatars. Give up the complaining and you'll get used to it eventually, everything changes, that's life, even the life of a forum dedicated to preserving a dead platform.
As per the upgrade, while I think it may have taken a bit too long too do, six months too long maybe, I'm happy it's finally done. phpbb2 was plagued with security issues and incredibly inefficient, full of bugs. While 3 is by no means perfect, I think it's just fine. Throwing it out because it doesn't work on a mac running classic is ridiculous, I don't think there are any members of this forum that don't have fairly constant access to a modern PC or Mac capable of running a new version of firefox or safari or even IE, all of which render phpbb3 just fine. Sure it's fun to type www.68kmla.org into netscape 2 on an old clunker of a quadra and watch it struggle to load and then, most commonly, crash out because you didn't allocate enough RAM or whatever, but even if it does load, do you really use it? Be honest, really- other than the occasional "I'm posting this from my PB520c!" or "I got my Centris 610 on the 'web!" post who uses old macs online, especially on this forum, regularly?
Maybe it helps for the atmosphere of browsing the site, but hey, just look at the postcounts for the various subforums, the vast majority of them are located in the lounge, and the vaaaaast majority of those have nothing to do with 68k macs.

I am hoping that the Subsilver2 theme is enabled sometime soon.
I understand it takes only a few clicks, since it's already installed.
It doesn't have to be the default. The wonderful thing is that you can choose which theme you want. You can have the new theme or the old theme or any other theme that the board administrator chooses to install. Users can go into their control panel and select their desired theme. It's a wonderful feature.

I'm OK with the new theme, but I think it would make people happy if they could choose. If someone designed a phpBB 3 theme that looked like System 7, would you install it? How about a few themes, like
System 1-6
System 7
Mac OS 8-9
Mac OS X
I could take a stab at it if you think you'd use my work. I have a setup where I can develop phpBB3 themes. Let me know if you're interested.

How many times I see this line but never understand it. Inefficient and lacking in standard features yes, that's obvious. Buggy, not so much. I haven't run into bugs in a long time and the times I do it's a mod that's been added, not the original software. As for security, I'd trust 2 more than 3 at this time simply because it's been sitting there for years and is not having new things added, which is where a lot of security holes come from to begin with. The last hole in 2 was with the usergroups and that was addressed with the final security update. In interest of heading off problems with a forum I run I've gone looking and I found nothing left. 3 on the other hand seems to have one or two new things show up on a regular basis, much as 2 did in its earlier stages. Most software is that way.phpbb2 was plagued with security issues and incredibly inefficient, full of bugs.
2 or 3 both can work fine, just depends on your needs. 68k seems to still be running ok, so I don't have any complaints on the upgrade.
The poster's name is right under the subject line of every message. It is very easy to see while reading the post. I don't see why it has to be included again to the left or right and think that it should be removed altogether. If you need to shoot a PM, know when they joined, or any of that other stuff, just click on the username and get their entire profile.
I'm one of the people who have disabled the avatars and signatures. The forums are not only much easier to read, but they are also more true to the System 6/7 design philosophy IMHO. Things are to the point, and relatively fast. About the only thing that doesn't fit that old school philosophy is the low contrast colour scheme, which is terrible on LCD displays.

Agreed - but I think it would be even nicer to remove that column altogether. I am unsure if that's an option as part of phpBB 3's default feature-set though, but if it was an option in the preferences, I think I would disable that column.I'm one of the people who have disabled the avatars and signatures.
It takes literally like one minute to enable, and in doing so ends several people's bitching and moaning.Geeez guys, we've had phpbb3 for what, a day and a half so far? Give him a break already..Yes, is it ever going to be enabled?I am hoping that the Subsilver2 theme is enabled sometime soon.

I'll also actually be able to use the forum. I still can't tell if a thread or sub-forum has new posts or not. I keep re-reading the same posts over again. I have read luddite's post in the bug report thread several times now.
Maybe so, but do you really expect him to do it in his sleep? It takes literally like one minute to enable, and in doing so ends several people's bitching and moaning.
You can't be serious... I'll grant you that the colour scheme is a bit wishy-washy, but even I've got used to the functionality by now. You know you can click on "View New Posts" to show threads that have new posts and then just click on the orange icon in front of the subject to start reading where you left off... of course if you don't log off you'll keep seeing the same posts.I'll also actually be able to use the forum. Really, it's no different from the old version... I'm starting to think you're just being curmudgeonly.
I don't know when he's up. He's in the UK but I think he goes to bed late. He was up at this time yesterday if I recall. He was up today and was on the forum and probably in the admin panel and probably even saw the link to enable the theme.Maybe so, but do you really expect him to do it in his sleep? It takes literally like one minute to enable, and in doing so ends several people's bitching and moaning.
I'm not a huge MySQL person but is it possible to have a phpBB2 version of the site sharing the same database? See, this is sort of like Vista, there's naturally work behind it but it still gets griped about. I for one just see no need for all the extra features phpBB 3 has, and it would be nice to see the old theme back, maybe even a possibility for text-only version also.
I quite like this look! My only comment is that it would be nice if the signature portions could be better marked - that line is quite faint and the sig appears as if it's part of the post. Maybe this will be less of a concern after a while; after all we're only a few days into this new version. Then again maybe it's my not so young eyes 8-o
Thanks Tom for all your work

I've activated the subsilver2 theme. Sorry that it took so long, but it's not as simple as just "clicking a button". I had to make a few customisations (site logo, menu, removing postcount etc), and I simply haven't had time over the last few days... so sue me for actually having a life outside of the internet...
Now I await the bitching that it's not enough like the theme on the old forums... [

That's not the point. If 10% (or 3%, or 0.5%) of us were blind, and the forum was impossible to use with a text reader, would you consider that acceptable?Be honest, really- other than the occasional "I'm posting this from my PB520c!" or "I got my Centris 610 on the 'web!" post who uses old macs online, especially on this forum, regularly?
IMHO, being able to use the forums from a 68k is a basic requirement, not an optional one.
In my opinion, yes. You can't necessarily make something like this [i.e. a complex webforum] compatible with everyone and everything that tries to access it, to expect so is just silly. As per classic macs requiring to be able to access it, well, in the grand scheme of things it makes sense what with this being a forum 'devoted' to them and all, and would be nice for the three people that use it, but would it really be practical? If 10% (or 3%, or 0.5%) of us were blind, and the forum was impossible to use with a text reader, would you consider that acceptable?
How well did the snitz board, or phpbb2 for that matter, render with lynx on an SE five years ago?
The old theme was no more compatible with screen reading software than this one is.
My impression of Snitz is that it worked very well on older browsers, but that it was hellaciously difficult (like: impossible) to maintain from a server end of things, because it used that JET database on a Windows server.
I suspect that it would probably be possible to create a theme for the forum using basic tables, html, a more contrasty set of colors, etc, although the question is who will put in the time to create the theme and make sure it does everything we want the forum to do.

Then what's the point of having threads like, "Post your youtube [etc] videos here!", or all these links to other sites that can't be viewed on such a machine? A lot of eBay auctions (depending on their styles) can't usually be viewed on a 68k, just to name an example. That's not the point. Thank you! for enabling Sub-Silver2. I detest the new look. It may simply be a fear and loathing of change on my part, but frankly, I don't get the attraction of changing things all the time. Once it works, the easiest thing is to leave it alone. Climbing the learning curve is a real cost. But with the SubSilver2 theme in effect, I am happy again.
Of course, I'd still be reading all my Mac conversations on comp.sys.mac.xxxx if that's where the conversations still were. I still don't understand the need for web based fora when there's a nice universal, easy to find, hierarchically arranged-by-topic set of discussion groups that cover every topic under the sun--and quite a few out of the sun too.
It's like I used to tell folks in the 90s when they asked me which computer was the easiest to use. I'd say, "The one you already know how to use is the easiest." Of course, if they didn't already know one, I'd point them at the Mac.

Regardless of the length of time spent in preparation, which was invisible to all of us but those doing the sweat-work, the implementation—on one visit the old, and on the next, the new—deserves much commendation. Commendation with jam on it, considering that very few genuine hiccups, as distinct from æsthetic or functional considerations, accompanied the transition.
However, I add my disappointment in some aspects of the redesign to that of others. With no clear vertical demarcation between post-column and poster-column, and even with a dark line between them, left-right reading can flick back to a clear vertical left demarcation as a border and proceed to the right-hand natural page-border. The poster-column is presently intrusive on the right, and much more easily overlooked, 'un'-seen or ignored on the left. I, for one, do value a clear indication of who the poster is, but avatar and name is enough detail.
Why retain the multicoloured Apple of antiquity and then bleach it in the same anæmic style as the general forum colouring? Why separate the related links new posts/your posts/unanswered posts? I also value quick access to my and other posters' existing posts. Repeating for the benefit of search-challenged posters is much less attractive than linking to existing answers. This is especially true if the existing answers contain complex sequences of procedure or advice.
I agree about accessibility for older Macs/browsers. Apart from the inevitable (and worthy of congratulation) first-time posts about being able to reach the Forums from an original Mac, none but the foolhardy will spend more than microseconds on the 'Net without firewall, stealth mode, NAT, copious RAM and cast-iron underpants (shorts to them as prefer them), so it is hardly a debility not to be able to use 68K Macs. That the oldies are not equipped is a fact, not a dastardly plot that the universal villains They have hatched. 68K Macs were born before the realities of the Web, good and bad, came to pass.
Overall, a fine structure from ~tl et alii. Now for some military spit-and-polish.

For what it's worth, I spent many moons hoping for a 68k Mac newsgroup before I decided to bother with things like web forums. Newsgroups would work fine on older machines. Indeed, I used them for a fairly long time from an Apple II. First using a shell account, then using QWK packets that were downloaded to the machine and viewed locally.
After all we deal with people talking from behind a keyboard. The demands placed upon the computer, or the user who has to maintain and upgrade that computer, should not be very high.
When I used the usenet, my only machines were antiquated ones. And Apple II in 1997 was my only machine. Not a secondary machine. Not a main machine. It was my only machine. When I hopped on these forums, particularly back in the Snitz days, it was pretty much the same story. Only I was using vintage 68k gear like a IIci or a Q950 as my only machine. Of course, that couldn't be sustained. While the web can be efficiently viewed on a vintage machine, most websites preclude that option because the end user has little control over how it is implemented. With time the people who visited the forums seemed to be less interested in 68k Macs, I suppose, because you couldn't just use a 68k Mac to view it.
Contrast that to the Apple II world, where you can still access comp.sys.apple2 with an Apple II. People still seem to be chatting about the machines, and doing cool stuff with the machines. Maybe it's because the Apple II was a dead end and people didn't move on because there wasn't a better Apple II. Or maybe it's because there was a forum that accepted them.

Unfortunately, USENET seems to be primarily used for file trading and spam now.Of course, I'd still be reading all my Mac conversations on comp.sys.mac.xxxx if that's where the conversations still were. I still don't understand the need for web based fora when there's a nice universal, easy to find, hierarchically arranged-by-topic set of discussion groups that cover every topic under the sun--and quite a few out of the sun too.
I think the best solution would be what I proposed earlier in this thread or the bug thread (I forget which). A universal phpBB forum reader that runs on 68K Macs. REALbasic v1 or v2 would be the easiest way to code this, and the program could run as far back as System 7.5 with Open Transport on at least a 68030. Plus, the program would support any phpBB forum, giving it great utility, and you could compile it for OS X using a newer version of REALbasic. I have the skills but currently not the time to write something like this up.I suspect that it would probably be possible to create a theme for the forum using basic tables, html, a more contrasty set of colors, etc, although the question is who will put in the time to create the theme and make sure it does everything we want the forum to do.
For those complaining about not being able to use the forum with a 68K Mac... did anyone actually try? I just logged on with iCab 2.99 on my LC 475 (with CSS disabled) and it's perfectly useable. It's not pretty, mind you and if you enable CSS it goes batshit., but it certainly works.
And it has a very System 7 theme ;-)
Edit: actually the only thing that doesn't translate nicely is the new logo (sorry, Tom!)

Changing to Subsilver2 fixed it for me.Not having the page numbers by the words of the thread on the forums is messing me up. I keep thinking the threads are only one page.
I think the Prosilver designers tried to make a pretty theme without thinking about the usability.
I agree with the earlier poster who stated that the work of the changeover was carried off near miraculously--so seemless and without down time.
One thing that still bothers me, even using the SubSilver theme is the "offline" and "On-line" box in the lefthand sidebar. It's larger than the name of the author and very distracting. Is there any way of going back to a little green dot or something similarly unobtrusive? Surely whether that user is on or off line is much less important than his/her identity.

How's that – I've moved it down to where the Profile/PM/etc buttons are. It should be a bit less obtrusive down there. One thing that still bothers me, even using the SubSilver theme is the "offline" and "On-line" box in the lefthand sidebar. I did try the other day and although it did load, things on the pages were in quite a different place than they were on my G4. The last forum appeared roughly the same on 68K browsers and modern browsers, and the one before that was virtually identicle on both. For those complaining about not being able to use the forum with a 68K Mac... did anyone actually try?
The new layout is actually growing on me a bit now and I especially like the fact that you can turn of signatures. That makes threads much more readable and makes it easier to concentrate on the topic being discussed.
I tried the forum using iCab 2.9.9 on an LC 575.
Prosilver, CSS Enabled: Complete disaster. Slow and unusable.
Prosilver, CSS Disabled: Ugly, kind of jumbled up, but usable.
Subsilver2, CSS Enabled: Actually renders quite well but very slowly.
Subsilver2, CSS Disabled: Not as ugly as Prosilver. Usable.

At All.
The site looks far less retro now and to be honest reeks of amateurism in it's design style. I greatly dislike the avatars and usernames being on the right. Secondly, the blue is quite distracting.
I sincerely hope this changes, and soon. Otherwise I might have to reduce my visits. Now because of the users or content mind you, but because it really, really, really, really, really hurts my eyes. I took the time to type out each 'really' because I actually feel that way. Sorry, but that is how it is.

Change to the Subsilver2 theme, it's not that hard. It's usable with Subsilver2.RE: New theme.

The upgrades look very nice. Thanks for all of your hard work, I really appreciate it.In case you haven't noticed, we've upgraded the forums to phpBB3. Quite a lot has changed, so feel free to have a look around and see what's new. There could well be bugs cropping up with the new system, so please report them in the Bug Tracker:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24
The old forum archive is offline for the moment (I needed the disk space for the upgrade), but I'll try and get it back online soon.
Cheers all,

Tom et al,
I gather that the theme itself isn't portable, but if you need Platinum graphics for any theme work you are doing, you are welcome to steal some from the PPCMLA. I have no experience with phpBB3, so I don't know if they will work out of the box, but I am nevertheless happy to make the donation (especially since they are © Apple, most likely). ;-)
Peace,
Drew

I'm on the wrong side of the post!
