I had a friend who had the same system and a similar problem - namely that no matter what version of OS 9.2x he tried from various torrents, it wouldn't boot up off the CD. After much searching around, he discovered you have to install Classic from within OS X, and then you can select the this OS to boot off natively.

Also make sure your graphics card is supported under Classic OS.
