Most Macs could not handle 8MB 30-pin SIMMs. The path for most, with a few notable exceptions, was 256kB, 1MB, 4MB, 16MB. That is, fourfold increments. Some left off one end or other of that progression, but could use 2MB (Classic II) or 8MB (IIci). 8MB seemingly appealed little to Apple engineers.
