Yep, that's the key. The reason why your Macintosh IIci's gave off a death chime is because:

1: The RAM was configured/installed incorrectly (in your case)

2: The RAM is just toast, which is unlikely

Any "Old-World" Macs will do that too in any of the situations above however.
