PowerBook 150 Failure. Hardware 28 posts Aug 10, 2009 — Jul 10, 2010
While Working on my powerBook 150 today, I got it to a almost perfect condition. Put it back together and, a Black screen and a bad smell. On further inspection it seems that I have put the IDE Connector one slide to the right. The HD is toast I know. But is there something I can do to fix this Ailing powerbook. I have removed the HD and all it does is show a black screen...

Ideas?

PMed ya.

Its a good thing you have a large collection, cause you seem to be the bringer of death ...

can you get to the main board of the mac, if so sniff around up close (like practically touching the mobo) and see if anything else smells like your hard drive (and as strong cause there might just be some lingering stank)

The Hard Drive, smells, and the IDE connector smells on the MainBoard.

The Machine is still outputting video. But just a blank black screen.

I'd say you may have torched the logic board. :(

So not interested in my offer? :(

Well JRL, TO be honest your offer is very tempting, but I really don't want to spend any monies. And shipping from CA might be hell. If you are willing to pay shipping on your end, I'll pay shipping on my end. What would you like? I have External HD IDE enclousures. I have some Ram Sticks. Some iBook Parts. Just name it and I'll tell you if I have it. I would like to fix the one I have though. Im sure I can get this thing back together. so yeah. :D

Thanks

[Edit:] Reading JRLs comment Your offer seems very good now. Damn. I feel so embarrased posting this.

PMed ya again.

It's dead, Jim.

Im not Jim! :D

Could it be the single fuse on the logic board? How dead is it?

The machine made a burning smell...unfortunately i'd say its toast. :(

Damn. Is it possible to replace a dead component instead of the whole board? How can putting in the IDE Connector incorrectly fry the board?

It can kill it very easily if it causes the wrong voltage to end up in the wrong place, or something horrible like that. If the machine's not powering up at all, its more than just the IDE controller being at fault...its probably not worth your time to try and repair it.

It is powering up. To a black screen. The floppy is getting power as well.

that just means you didnt kill the internal power supply, logic on the other hand is a very fragile thing, you basically shunted 5 volts down a (less than) 3 volt data line and most likely cooked something

yes it might be possible to repair if its something semi simple, but I would not touch it (and I am working on my masters in electronic design)

chalk it up to experience, and you need to slow down and pay attention, something you seem to tend not to do

Well... Me an JRL are working out a deal. So, yep. Thanks for the help.

Not trying to be rude, but you need to learn from this mistake and try to pay closer attention next time. :(

basically, don't rush and make sure you haven't messed anything up.

Yeah i know :(

I was so proud of my powerbook.

I am going to check the IDE connector on every laptop I upgrade from now on!

No, you are going to check any work you do, BEFORE you apply power. Come on, this isn't hard to get right.

Yeah, it's just more than checking the IDE connector. It's applying careful work and keen eyes on ANY thing you do.

Sure thing. Thanks for the help!

No thanks needed, it's for your own good. ;)

I'll take it if you can't fix it. I have two of them with bad LCD screens here.

How much are you willing to pay for it? I can ship it out...

FYI, I also have two working 150s, one with the display bezel in bad condition, but otherwise fine; the other in good to very good condition. I still have one power supply too. Be happy to make a deal for either of them...something like $20 solo plus actual shipping or $30 for both plus shipping comes to mind...

J.

Well, I plugged it in today for giggles, and whaddya know, I got a chime and the mouse screen. I get varying results though, like sometimes i get chimes of death, and once or twice I get a black screen. But most of the times i get a screen with a cursor.

Ideas?

RAM went to hell?

In my Classic, when one of the RAM modules went to hell I saw the same behavior. Each boot was a crap shoot.

your going to have to take a magnifying glass and light to the logic board. the smoke may had very well come from a circuit trace opening up like a fuse. seen it a few times. if it was an IC of any sorts, if it didnt boot the first time, it would never boot again.

I think you opened a circuit trace somewhere... need to locate and repair it.
