Scored a Powermac G3 All In One Hardware 31 posts Aug 12, 2009 — Aug 26, 2009
From Craigslist for 20.00 MINT... He thought it was broke, it just needed a pram battery.

Originally it was 30.00 got him down to 20.00

Upgraded the CPU (From eBay) for 10.00 to 400MHZ w/1meg level 2 cache.

Upped the HDD for 15.00 to 120GB.

Memory pc100 to 512mb from 32mb for 20.00.

Vram upped to 6 mb from 2. 5.00

USB Card, 15.00..

Now I can run all of my old stuff!!!! I used to have a color Classic that I posted back in 8/08 but I sold it on ebay due to the fact that it could not run everything It had even with a upgraded CPU.

So the AIO is the color classic grown up!!!!!

But the AIO IS HEAVY... But the monitor in it is like brand new. I don't think there was too much time on this... seriously a iMac original now most of the monitors are getting really dark for a 10 yr old computer.

This monitor is bright and crisp...

They're not my cup of tea, but congrats on the conquest!

Enjoy your Molar Mac!

jt :beige:

I've actually never seen a G3 AIO "in da flesh", as they were never sold here in Australia. And from what I've seen in photos (i'm sorry, but I do think it is most likely The Ugliest Mac Ever), thats probably a good thing. :p But as jt said, i hope you enjoy it and that it serves you well. :) Great score. :)

Yeah they are unique, that's why I like it.

I also like it for expandability also...

But they are heavy tho... 60lbs... my G5 is 50lbs...

I owned two for a while; I did like them a lot but they are really heavy.

Nevertheless, nice score! :D

This thing is like new tho, i've seen alot on ebay that are yellow and marked up.

They are really heavy... I thought the emac was heavy...

but since this is my only "Classic" mac it's a keeper...

runs my old games and office 2001 great.

I just have os9.2.2 did have 10.2.8 but wasn't impressed...

But I have a dual core G5 for my newest programs.

The monitor in it is realy nice, alot nicer than the first gen imacs...

G3 or G4? IC-China occasionally has cheap G4 ZIFs

Don't know if this is cheap, but . . .

He got a book to me very quickly, but he's had to turn off the buy it now option, so email him if it's what want for your Molar Mac.

The G4 ZIFs are back in stock, you should be able to purchase them now. The vacation is over as well.

I should have at least 15 more G4 ZIFs I can sell and plenty of jumpers (required for installation into Beige G3 and B&W G3).

Cool!! I just ordered a ZIF G4... I didn't need the jumpers as I already have it set for 400mhz with the G3 upgrade that I put in, I WAS looking on ebay for a G4 Ziff b4 I bought the g3 400mhz...

so I'll have a Powermac G4 All In One... Cool!!!!

THANKS!!!!!

Jim

Got your order today, I should have that out on Monday :)

Cool Thanks!

I remember reading Leopard would be capable on a B&W with a G4 upgrade. Do you think you could get Leopard on an AIO with a G4 upgrade?

Just sayin'. :)

It's extremely difficult. More old drivers were removed from Leopard that have to be put back.

Not worth it IMHO, except for the "because you can" factor.

I'm going to put Mac os 9.2.2 and then 10.2.8.

I really don't want to use xpostfacto, too much of a pain.

I'll be happy with the G4 and 10.2.8.

with the G4 it should be a little snappier than with the G3... Right?

The G4 will definitely improve OS X. OS 9 will also be slightly faster.

Also, the G4 has a 1 MB cache. If your G3 has a smaller cache then that will be an improvement as well. (If it has a 1 MB Cache then no improvement).

I would recommend Panther though, it has speed improvements, and it's not too hard to use with XPostFacto.

The 400 MHZ G3 I bought on eBay has 1m cache but going to G4 like you said will be faster.

Yes but xpostfacto runs into problems if you zap the pram or reet the nvram...

Or if the pram battery goes dead (Even tho I bought a new one for the AIO)

Leopard will run on the AIO with a G4 upgrade.

You will need to disable the onboard video and replace it with a PCI Mac ROM video card (such as the ATI Radeon Mac Edition), then copy the Gossamer kexts into the system installation. Finally, use XPostFacto to boot up off that disc and into Mac OS X Leopard.

I have the Gossamer, B&W and Yikes kernel extensions here, was planning to experiment rolling them into LeopardAssist 3 along with the XPostFacto stuff. It never came to be, but with the files it can still be done, it's just a little more hacking.

I installed 10.3.9 with xpostfacto things seem to be good, just waiting on my G4 400 CPU.

it is alot snappier with 10.3.9 with the G3 @ 400 mhz...

Is everyone 100% sure that these machines cannot go up to 1 Gig of memory?

Yep up to 768mb

Unfortunately since the beige G3s only have 3 slots, yes.

Got the G4 upgrade, runs great...

It's alot snappier than with the G3....

and I recieved my Apple DVD-R and that works great...

just wait ing for my ebay pci wireless card.. it states that it is airport compatible...plug and play as long as you have 10.3.9...

I had one, nice machine. Heavy as all get out though. The power lead going to the drives stopped working, which basically made it useless unless I used another power supply. Gave it away to scrap, after stripping out all the juicy parts, like the power splice cable, and the zip drive with floppy power connector.

This is my favorite PPC machine, hands down. I affectionately call mine weirdway. I even used it as a sever for a bit. NetBSD & Linux run like a charm :)

[as does OS9 & X]

I actually like how they look

I've always liked how they look and to be honest, would not mind owning one. It'd be like an iMac except with proper expansion built right in.

I wouldn't mind owning one either if they weren't so mindblowingly large.

They are very interesting machine. I don't think I have ever seen one in da flesh.

Take some pictures of you G4 AIO.

Mike Richardson sells a Desktop G3 with a G4, and just the G4 makes it worth it to buy that computer, It would make a nice server.

How do I attach pictures?

I really didn't think the G4 was going to make a big difference but it does.

I mean you cannot play any OSX games but I do have OS 9.2.2 for my old games.

The internet runs smooth...

I have run some dreamweaver how-to movies on it and it is acceptable frame rate.

And now with the inclusion of the DVD-RW that I bought on ebay I can share or install programs on DVD and burn

DVD's.

It is a very capable machine.

I bought it for 20.00 + with the additions I spent 80.00 on upgrades...

the video memory is upped to 6meg. so that helps...

and I am still waiting for my pci wireless card for it.

actually this machine is a bit heavier than a emac.

so the upgrades so far:

512mg memory,

120GB hdd

G4 cpu upgrade

Video memory 4 mb upgrade

DVD-rw drive

usb 2.0 card (it runs usb 1.1 under os 9.2.2 and 2.0 under osX)

and soon to have PCI wireless card

it runs itunes great, I have my whole 50 gig library on it.

eMac weigh 50lbs, G3 AIO weigh 60 lbs.
