MIDI and the Roland JV-1010 on a Mac Classic II

I am using my Mac Classic II for MIDI performance.

Aside from having a hard time finding appropriate software, I am a bit confused as to how it all works. Right now I'm using some cheapo share ware program called "MIDI Companion" that I found on Harmony Central whose purpose is to essentially just play back tracks I composed in Logic on my MacBook.

The Roland JV-1010 has a serial connection in the back and the manual says that I should be able to connect it directly to the modem or printer connection on the Mac.

However, when I connect it MIDI Companion tells me that the MIDI interface has not been detected.

Ideas? :-/

A good idea is to use Apple MIDI Manager/PatchBay and OMS (yes, a System 7.1 compatible version is out there).

I believe that neither are too hard to find.

I saw that but I am using System 7.0.1, should I use that bootable 7.5.3 disk that someone posted on one of the other threads to install this software?

I found a place that has MIDI Manager but for some reason the StuffIt I have on my MacBook Pro doesn't want to open it.

There's a shareware sequencer called MIDIgraphy that IIRC will run on System 7. Searching these forums for MIDI will reveal other clues.

I installed that and opened a .MID file that I had made on another computer and I didn't get any signal coming out of the machine into the MIDI unit I have. I don't understand what I'm not doing; I have the hardware setup to accept a Mac signal through the serial cable, I have the modem selected as the MIDI port out, everything should be working.... :?:

Are your MIDI send and receive channels consistent on the Mac and the JV? In other words, are you sending the MIDI data out of the Mac and into the JV on the same MIDI channel?

I finally got it working! The cable that I had purchased was not a cross over cable and the Mac requires one to hook up to the Roland so a bit of splitting and soldering was in order and voila! It works! Now I just need to do some recapping and I'm in business! Thanks so much to everyone on this board for all of your help, this place is an invaluable resource.
