I moved the computer to another room, and when I tried again, there was no picture at all.

Did you remember to also move the screen?

What "switches" are you talking about? My adapter doesn't have any.

I have an old Mac-VGA adapter without switches, and it really is just a VGA adapter, it won't do anything except 640x480.

The adapters "with switches" have a bank of either 6 or 10 DIP switches on them.
