Well part of the problem is the enclosed PSU. Before the SE, the PSU was exposed on the analog board. But with the SE, Apple used a Sony PSU unit which has its own case and PCB, separate from the analog board. So the extra airflow is really needed, IMO, to help cool the enclosed PSU.
