What you you think, was this a good deal or what?
I was looking on craigslist today and saw a PM G5 2.3GHZ 2004 model and the guy wanted 225.00 B/C he said it was shutting down programs by itself, programs not the OS or the hardware..
I go over there and the unit was in good condition I offered him 200.00 he said he would throw in a AP extreme card then it would be 225.00, I said ok..
I get it home and clean it up, change the battery for the pram... then I noticed something rattling inside... I shake the G5 upside down and 2 of the pci slot screws fell out (the slots had no slot covers or screws...
He had different brand memory besides the 512mb that was original, so I took the non original memory and kept the 512mb in...
So I check everything out and made sure no other screws were inside the unit...
I am using it now.. and it seems fine and ran a dvd for 2 hrs and it seems fine...
What do you think for the price?
Jim

5 years ago, in 2004, I purchased a used blue & white G3 with 256 MB of RAM and a 20 GB hard disk with nothing but the standard OS 8.5 system install for a little over $200. That G3 is still in use to this very day, except with OS 10.4.x and the addition of an 80 GB hard drive.
Clearly, I got a good value. IMO, so did you.

If thats US$225, I think you paid a fair price for it. If you ask me, most PowerPC systems are massively overpriced these days, and I suspect that the values of most PowerPC systems will take a nosedive in the coming months.
yes it was 225.00 USD... I been checking them out on ebay and some (like what I just bought today) go for 600.00 and up...
and they want 50.00 or 60.00 for shipping...

Yeah, here in Australia, they commonly go for $800 - $1200...I don't think i've ever seen a G5 go for less than AU$800, ridiculous, if you ask me.
Personally I think you paid a good, fair price for a 5 year old system that is no longer supported under the current Mac OS.

I Love The G5's they are tanks!!!
But just B/C they aren't supported doesn't mean they are no good...
I really was never into LAGS (Latest and Greatest Syndrome)... one can go broke doing that...
There are people running OS 9.2.2 and still being productive, getting emails and such...

It all depends what you are going to do with it. $225 for a G5 you intend to use (and is up to the challenge) as your main mac is a good price, but $225 for something to add to your collection that will see little use is not good since the prices are not near rock bottom yet.
I spent $400 or so back in 2000 for build up an 8500 with G3, 8MB video card, decent RAM, and IDE card for my main hobby mac. It was money well spent because it ran OS 9 well and lasted me untill a year or so ago when I got a B&W for free. If I had not used it I would have been better off waiting untill PCI macs were worthless and then get a loaded one for penuts. One day I want the last OS 9 booting G4 to finish my collection, but I can/will wait for them to be so obsolete that they are worthless before I do.
People need to decide what they want to actually use as their main rig and what they want to collect to determine what is a good deal.

I'll be running Adobe CS 4 with my main machine my 2.0 dual core G5..
it's not for a collection but to be used..
I know I have to up the memory but there's no rush...
The G5's are more than enough to run Adobe CD 4 and other stuff I have... for awhile...

Family Guy is produced under OS 9. I've seen behind the scenes video. Pretty awesome to know that, even if none of you like the show.I Love The G5's they are tanks!!!

Well I found this, too bad I don't have $100.

Where's this behind the scenes video?
Recall that Family Guy actually premiered in 1999. Mac OS 9 was in heavy use at the time. A behind the scenes video from that era would reflect such.
My 2.3 was introduced a little bit before the dual cores... so it's not that old, maybe in computer years but its still a VERY capable machine...

The G4s already have taken a dive. $150 locally got you a MDD 1.0ghz...that was up for a long time.If thats US$225, I think you paid a fair price for it. If you ask me, most PowerPC systems are massively overpriced these days, and I suspect that the values of most PowerPC systems will take a nosedive in the coming months.
You have to remember that the G4's are a little older than the G5's and the G5's are a little older than the MacPro...
But in the end it's up to the person who uses it nd what they use it for...
I personally love the G5, now I have 2 (check my sig).
And they will be used...
with the economy the way it is and being unemployed and a person who doesn't get into the LAGS syndrome to me the G5 is great...

Wow thats an amazing deal!
Thanks... It runs very good.... the previous owner never did any maint on it and then finding 2 screws in it floating around tells me that someone tried to do something... but they are out now and it's been running all day running bionic, that's pretty cpu intensive...
$225 is the cheapest I've heard of for a G5. Around here they go for $650 up (some guy was asking $2000 on Craigslist - good luck!). Except for the water coolers, they are built like tanks and very reliable. I think you got a deal!
I think you got a good deal on the machine.
I'd pay $225 for the machine. Although I would more than likely offer only $200 as I wouldn't need the AP card since the only things in my house that are wireless are my laptops and iPod Touch. Everything else connects via CAT5 the way God intended.

What I did with the AP was to post it on ebay... Some one bought it for 30.00 bux... so in actuality I paid 195.00 for the G5...
OK, I put the 2.3GHZ on ebay... I don't have enough space on the desk, I put it up for 550.00 and within 2 hrs it was gone.. buy it now.
I had immediate payment option, so I looked for a mac mini auction and found one, a mac mini 2009 (the newest with the nvidia graphics) BNIB with 2GB ram and I got it for 575.00 + 10.00 shipping.
BUT I'm keeping my G5 2.0 with the 16GB ram....it flies now with the ATI radeon X1900 in it...

Curious, why did you sell the faster one instead of just transfering all your parts from the 2.0 to the 2.3?
My 2.0 is a dual core, the 2.3 was a dual processor.
mine has 16GB ram, the 2.3's max was 8GB.
The ram is not interchangable.
the 2.3 was pciX, my 2.0 is pciE, I just bought a ATI x1900 radeon...

Nice work! I'd probably have kept the dual core model too. Even with the faster system bus and CPU, I bet having PCIe, faster RAM, and larger cache all have advantages over the older one. Just curious though, did you ever Xbench the two against each other just to see?OK, I put the 2.3GHZ on ebay... No, I tried to run xbench but when it was time to upload the results it said the server was not available, I thought it was little snitch but it wasn't
I recieved the Mini yesterday it is nice for a second Mac.
It seems like my G5 is faster...or on par with the mini
I installed 10.6 on the mini.
the mini is the 2009 model... with 2 GB ram...
I thought mini's were supposed to be faster?

If it's graphics, then no. a 2.3Ghz G5 will win out over a mini. Actually, a 2.3Ghz SHOULD win out over the mini. at that speed, there's more horse power in the G5 than the miniI thought mini's were supposed to be faster?
Not really. 1.6GHz Core1 chips and 1.6GHz Core2 chips (the original mac mini and the original macbook air) outgun the G5s in memory and processor performance. Like, all G5s except for the dual 2.7 and dual-dual 2.5. It's only when you can install a discrete graphics chip that's got like a gig of memory, and/or when you can install like sixteen gigs of ram that it's actually a better idea to get a G5, especially now that snow leopard and any/all 64-bit apps (Adobe's apps specifically) will be Intel/SL only.
AdobeCS5 will be intel-only, as an example.
The mini will act faster if you were able to put a 3.5-inch 7200rpm or 10,000rpm hard disks and a bunch of ram into it, but at 2.0GHz it definitely outguns any/all G5s in terms of CPU calculations, and with 1067MHz or 1333MHz ram, it definitely outguns a G5 in raw ram performance.

I don't know.. I've got 16GB Ram, ATI Raedon X1900 Vid card... it seems like my G5 is faster....
Yeah, because of fast disks and having 16gb of ram. If your G5 had a 2.5-inch 5400rpm disk and only 2gb of ram, the Mini would likely be faster.
There's also the whole "real world" where not everything is 100% bound to the CPU.
Also if you're using a lot of PPC apps (CS2, Office'04, Poser 6, just as examples) than even a G4 might be faster.
As far as video cards go, the X1900 and the GeForce 6800/7800 are all ancient by now. Unless they're rockin' like a gig of their own memory I wouldn't be surprised if more modern graphics/games would benefit from the fact that a geforce 9400m is just newer and faster on their own, although for the most hardcore of things, shared memory is never the best thing.
Although it's worth noting that things like photoshop CS4 benefit more (although in somewhat silly ways) from a 9400m and purely being faster at framebuffer and some awesome new GPU things photoshop can do, than they ever would from GPUs that don't support some of the awesomest new things, like 6800/7800 and similarly aged ATi GPUs.

I still think the G5 is a bit faster... but that is my opinion..
The unit and all of the parts might be out of date but I works for me....
I still love the PPC platform...
And to pluck down 3K for a Mac Pro makes no economical sense to me, My G5 is a VERY capable machine...
So now I have the best of both worlds, PPC (I have over 500GB programs and files) and I have the newer Mac Mini 2009 version.
Remember, some people are cranking out programs, documents on Mac's that are 15 years old... MAC's are not PC's, you buy a PC and hope you get 4 years out of it... Buy a Mac and the total cost of ownership is lower and it's still productive over 8 years and more, depends what you want or do with it...
