just found an 030 w/FPU card in a Mac Plus 68k 13 posts Sep 27, 2009 — Sep 28, 2009
Has anyone seen this before? I bought a Plus on eBay for $10 and it has a daughtercard with an 030 (and FPU). I bought the Plus just to get a working analog board, so wasn't expect this. Anyone heard of this kind of board?

Fairly common upgrade for the Plus and SE. See LowEnd Mac's section on Plus Accelerators.

Here's a speed comparison on the popular Brainstorm card.

an 030 in a mac plus 8-o wow how fast is the 030?

Could be 25 or 30 MHz, IIRC.

The Plus/FatMac/128k Macs, if you were lucky, required only the "Killy Clip" Mod for installing an upgrade card. If you were unlucky, as I was, the Ceramic Packaged 68000 required you to solder the legs of a 68k "socket" to the legs of said Ceramic Packaged Proc, fairly straightforward, but with the soldering skills I had back in the day . . .

. . . it was a fairly daunting prospect . . . :I

. . . so I chickened out and ordered a 128k MoBo from Shreve Systems . . . it had same freakin' ceramic Proc!

. . . so I got the job done, (on the 128k MoBo, of course!) it was F*U*G*L*Y, but it worked! ;D

I'm pretty sure the Killy Clip is still in what remains of my MacPartsHoard! [:D] ]'>

If so, I'll take some piccies for the Photography/Documentation Thread, I doubt if many of the younger comrades have ever seen this ingenious/elegant piece of off the shelf HackWare engineering . . .

. . . or in this era of microscopic SMT, I wonder if some of them have ever even seen a freakin' socket for that matter! :?:

< wonders if he's still got that stock FatMac MoBo lurkin' somewhere amongst the toy boxes? >

Hey jt, how much effort does it take to make all of those smilies and bolds and underlines and italics that are so customary to your posts? ::)

Well, let's see a photo then.

I would also like to see a benchmark result from your accelerated Plus, preferably from Norton System Info 3.x. I added a Norton benchmark result to the description under my 50MHz 030 SE/30 recently, so you can compare.

Anybody want this thing? The case was modded to include a fan, so if you want it, you may need the case as well. The floppy mech is toast. I need the analog board for my regular Plus, so I am keeping that. Let me know. I did boot it up and it at least cleared the self-tests (gave me the flashing disc icon), but no other means to test it (well I could dig out the external mech and try that if necessary.

Yet another reason a photo of your system is important.

Simply beautiful. Thank you!

Where are you located and how much do you want for it?

A LOT less time than composing the actual .TXT, as a matter of fact!

I'm a visual thinker, the formatting & emoticons help me in translating what I want to say from my native language (images) into my second language (American English) and don't even ASK about how I did trying to pick up Foreign Languages!

I spend a lot of time in preview mode in an attempt to make my meaning clear and concise. The rest of the time I just pound away at the KBD . . .

. . . producing nothing but indecipherable drivel! [:o)] ]'>
