Found it quite by accident. A very small application. You can change the startup image from that tired looking gray apple to something else. Says it's for Tiger or Leopard, don't know if there's an older version or not.

Now my Intel iMac starts up with a Happy Mac and my iBook with a Picasso Mac! :approve:

Very nice little app. I have a nice colour Apple now instead of that boring grey one.

Yep, my iMac G5 has a rainbow apple at boot for a while now.
