Browsing on the 1400 when connecting with an Ethernet card via the PC Card slot is always going to be slow, because it is a 16 bit card cage. I know there is an internal ethernet option and I believe that is the fastest way, but not wireless.
The PowerBook Wallstreet is much faster in this regard, since its PC Card cage is 32 bit. My 2400c is 32 bit as well, since I modified it as such. I do not know of any hacks to get the 1400's PC card cage to 32 bit.

Well, PC Card can go up to 8 MB/s, which is much faster than 802.11b, so the card slot isn't the limiting factor if you are only using 802.11b.

Yes, 100 Megabit Ethernet will be limited (as 8 MB/s comes to 64 Mb/s,) but unless your internet connection is faster than 64 Mb/s, you won't notice. (Heck, on the 1400, the speed of the computer itself is likely the speed limiting factor there.
