Alright. The installer for my PowerBook 500-series installer has two options at the top of the list: "System for PowerBook 500 series" and "Min System for PowerBook 500 series". However, I just noticed that at the bottom of the list is...... "Update System Software for any Macintosh"!
Installing that over the base 7.1 that's on my SE/30 works perfectly.
The only oddity is the reporting of the version number. In the installer, it claims to be 7.1.1. After it is installed, "About This Macintosh" says just 7.1. But the Finder file "Get Info" window shows 7.1.3.
