I did say no more...
But I couldn't pass these up for $25. I did pass on a MDD 1.42GHz and a 450MHz Sawtooth (lady wanted another $40 for those...meh.)
This is my first conquest in about 4 years.
I have always wanted a Quicksilver, both of these had sticky notes that said they didn't work. The 933 on the left was just missing the memory, otherwise it is very nice! The 867 on the right probably has a bad power supply.
Think I will keep the 933 and use it for something. The other, I don't know, maybe I will keep it for parts, QS were always my favorites.

They're excellent machines. Many had bad power supplies, though.

The QS are, imo, one of the prettiest macs ever made, and I'd love to add one to my collection someday. Nice score!
I prefer the Sawtooth aesthetically but the QS isn't bad. I may polish mine tomorrow.

This is somewhat reminiscent of one of my first big finds, where I found a veritable pallet-load of QuickSilvers (that's where I got mine from) at a nearby consignment warehouse. I regret not getting more of them, but it was a very hot summer's day, our car was in the shop (had to borrow a friend's car to get there), and I was short on cash :scrambled: .
Oh, well. I think the three SE's (2x800k, 1xSuperDrive) and Plus I got instead made up for it

Thanks, the 933 really cleaned up nicely with some Goo Gone and Magic Eraser work. Allegedly these came from an elementary school so I am shocked that nobody poked their finger through the speaker!
I may look into doing the ATX power supply conversion on the 867 just so that it will at least boot. I haven't had any luck just simply fixing power supplies in the past...Charles, you have any experience with these? I tried a memory swap, CUDA reset, good battery, etc...just totally dead with a blinking red light on the motherboard.

I'm pretty sure the PSU needs caps in those.

Oh yeah I did try reseating the CPU as well. Maybe I'll look into recapping it. Hate to just give up on it, ya know.
yeah for sure... those psu's are known for issues, pretty sure its just caps.
I have a couple QS's they are nice for single CPU machines. My favorite looking G4 tower is a tossup between the MDD and the QS.
I tried to work on one of these back when these things were current. upped and died. powered on with LED, but no chime or anything. Never did figure it out other than one of the v-regs shorted on the CPU card.
So I am posting from the 933 right now... WOW does this thing scream! I dug through my parts stash and found three 512MB memory sticks, a 320GB IDE hard drive...and an AirPort card! I loaded up 10.4 Server on it for kicks. Web browsing under Camino and Safari is pretty slow but everything else is great.
They're not bad systems. I've got an (by comparison) anemic 733 model and it moves just fine.
I have a Dual 800 Quicksilver and an 867. The 867's PSU died many years back... didn't realize caps were an issue. Maybe I'll try cutting my teeth on that one so I can learn to start recapping some of my less-valuable models... There's an Irish guy on YouTube who has a lot of recap videos, and I recently found techknight's channel to learn from as well...

This thing would install tiger in like 9 minutes. most machines were double or triple that time.
Everything was lightning fast, HD, Optical Drive, I/O, CPU, it was a whole package.

Knock on wood, my quick silvers psu's are good only the MDD's I've had had issues.
Same here! Last I knew, all my G4 towers (Sawtooth 500, Quicksilver, Dual 1.25 MDD) worked perfectly.
I think what I have is fairly representative of the line, so I doubt I'll get any more of them.
I might get a Gigabit Ethernet or Digital Audio at some point, but the former is basically a Sawtooth with better ethernet and dual CPU capabilities, and the latter is a Quicksilver in a graphite case, so not sure if it'd be worth it (I probably wouldn't turn either one down if they were free and local (or maybe a trade), though).

The Dual 800 Quicksilver DOES install Tiger lightning fast! I've also noticed that. One of these days I'm going to use LeopardAssist to put Leopard on there. It's always stuck in my craw that the 867 will run Leopard when the Dual 800 will not, even though it outperforms the 867 in many ways.
Apple had a thing for dual-CPU machines, even though the OS and most apps really could never take advantage of that. Photoshop is one exception. Photoshop CS4 is amazingly quick, even by today's standards, for a 12 year-old machine. I'd love to find a cheap IDE SSD for it one of these days.
I upgraded it with a full 1.5gb RAM. The stock 80gb drive loads OS 9.2.2 and a 200gb drive loads Tiger. I still do all my QuickBooks Pro work on it. On the OS 9 drive, I've got a slew of apps on there, like Final Cut Pro, early Adobe InDesign, Macromedia Director, Kai's PowerTools, Premiere, Photoshop... a whole suite of multimedia & design apps that would've cost THOUSANDS back in the day.

In other news, I felt I had to pass on the first 68k that I have seen for sale in ages. I actually saw it at a yard sale from the highway, no kidding. It was a Performa 577, and it was $200. [xx(] ]'>

I got my Performa 637 MME (Money Magazine Edition) for $80. You might say it was expensive, but the thing is literally in pristine condition, with minimal yellowing and virtually no dust/grime inside (it must've spent most of its life packed away in a box in someone's closet).
The deals are still out there, one just has to know where to look.

I don't think the guy even knew what he had, it just had an Apple logo so it must be worth a bunch? Who knows. I'm done acquiring more if they're not going to be cheap.

Whenever I find someone selling a Performa (insert # here), or one of the dime-a-dozen compacts on craigslist, and they want hundreds of semolians for them, I ALWAYS send them a note saying "as a collector, I could literally put a message on one forum and have one of these for $20-$30 by the end of the day. I know you're hoping that somebody will pay you $200 for that thing, but 1) collectors like me are wise to it, and 2) anybody who's not a collector won't have that kind of money to throw away."
