A fizzling sound, plus erratic focus usually points to a high-voltage problem. It could be as simple as crud on the crt pins or socket/board, or as serious as a breakdown inside the flyback transformer. As a first diagnostic step, you'll need to open it up and take a careful look around. Report back on what you find, and we can go from there.
