iPad in Compact Mac
I WAS RIGHT!! ( viewtopic.php?p=123500#p123500 )
The iPad fits perfectly inside a Compact Mac.

I had hoped to be the first one to do this after figuring out it should work, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy one ... just not enough need for it, at least not until they improve the pixel density like they have for the iPhone.
I also debated where to put this. Technically it's a "hack", and it's about the iPad (so the Lounge). But ultimately it will be of most interest to Compact Mac enthusiasts. :beige:
Now just jailbreak that thing and run Mini vMac on it! This companion Wired article suggests that the Air Display App could be used to run Mini vMac from a desktop Mac. Even better!
Of course I would advocate for putting it inside the Mac without damaging the case. But that would be more-or-less permanent, as well as limit access to the connector port, which means, no charging. Wireless connectivity should control everything else, including audio out. I'm thinking if a person is willing to go this far, however, that a modified connector attached to a ribbon cable might be able to just fit within the case allowing access from the rear.

I have to admit, it looks pretty sexy. Of the 68k compacts the Classic and Classic II were the best looking of the bunch.
Ooh la la. Until now, I have taken no real interest in the iPad.
I wonder if there could be any use for the floppy hole.

There is always use for the floppy hole ... :beige:I wonder if there could be any use for the floppy hole.
I imagine a more permanent non-destructive installation in which case some kind of custom dock connector would be created. I could see splitting off the data lines to a mounted USB camera dock for plugging in cameras, flash cards and anything else the thing will support in the future (maybe even synching with iTunes.
Otherwise, put a small toaster mechanism in there for making Pop Tarts ... can't run any hotter than the original innards.
Or just a pocket for business cards, pen and stylus storage, and other "tools" you might use when docked. Maybe an Apple coaster for your beverage.
If using as a spanning monitor with your MacBook or desktop via the Air Display App, then the compact case can become a repository for hard drives and other peripherals, in which case the floppy port possibilities become endless, why you could even use it as a floppy port!
In fact the more I think about it, this solves the LCD in a compact case problem. Now you can just stick a Mini in the case, stick an iPad in the case and use Air Display to connect them. No hacking, no muss, no fuss.
Now I'm really jonesing to do this ... must wait until iPad 2 to pick up original one for cheap for this hack ...
Anybody remember Danamania's Photoshop "hacks," with the thinned-down LCD compact? Alas, her site is no longer up, but one of those could now surely be made in the flesh, as it were. Any pics left, Dana?
But what we have here is a Compact Mac-Tablet DuoDock. Sure beats a fishtank.

as far as the floppy, can we say auto inject /eject ipod touch dock? |)
Yeah this is a great hack!
I was thinking of something similar but for a Lisa case. 9.7" is the standard screen size for all the Lisa and Compact Macs right?
I can afford a low end iPad much more easily than a working Lisa
Wow.

Wow.Nope. Lisa had a luxuriously huge 12" display!9.7" is the standard screen size for all the Lisa and Compact Macs right?
Sadly, it will not fit without major modding. The iPod Touch is about the thickness of 2.3 floppies. But anybody willing to do it, it's a great idea! (the Plus or SE might make a better candidate as they would show the case alterations the least)as far as the floppy, can we say auto inject /eject ipod touch dock? |)
An iPod Shuffle, or any old USB stick however...
Wonder if I could get a bank loan to produce something like this ... somehow I think the market isn't quite big enough.
This would probably go over better.

Digital callipers in hand, a brand new 32gb ipod touch, in the middle where the 2 curves max out is 8.7 mm (and some change), the slot on my performa 200 is 6.25mmSadly, it will not fit without major modding. :sadmac:
it will however just barley fit into the faceplate of a pc drive, the center section is 8.9mm on standard pc drives, so maybe in the future for someone's manual disk drive
I'd buy one. But only if it was the same bigger Apple shown there AND rainbow! Long live the old Apple Logo!
Those are Dana's vhacks (and looking at the source, I see they're over on Applefritter).
Hmm.... If I made a stand like a Classic front bezel out of a nice piece of light-coloured wood, I could rout out a hole large enough to access the Home button. And a charging/ docking arrangement.
How about a curly maple Classic-iPad-Dock? It'd be the right height for working on text with a keyboard. I never thought I'd say this about the iPad, but it's actually getting tempting.

Actually credit where credit is due, the Plus LCD is Dana's, the iMacintosh is mine. Those are Dana's vhacks (and looking at the source, I see they're over on Applefritter).
Yeah, I'd recommend and SE. It would require the least amount of modification. Get the hard drive slugs for both floppy slots, then take out a thick section in between them ... that should be just about right, and match the placement of floppy slots on the rest of the compact Macs ever made.Digital callipers in hand, a brand new 32gb ipod touch, in the middle where the 2 curves max out is 8.7 mm (and some change), the slot on my performa 200 is 6.25mm
Ahh, finally did the deed:
nice tools
calipers, razor saw, I have the digital version and the xacto version, but quality precision tools make the hack

That looks totally awesome.
What are you talking about? Her site is still up.Anybody remember Danamania's Photoshop "hacks," with the thinned-down LCD compact? Alas, her site is no longer up, but one of those could now surely be made in the flesh, as it were. Any pics left, Dana?

Doesn't look like she has added anything since 2007... (She comments on here fairly regularly, though.) And the Danaquarium is getting pretty well comment-spammed.
If these rumors come to be, the 7" iPad will be the one to semi-permanently install in a compact Mac. That way, the dock connector will fit and the the home button will be accessible in the black border around the screen, which will look much more like the way a compact is supposed to look. It will probably require much less modification than than the current dock.

If that 7" iPad comes in at a proportional price point, I'm sold.
Ahhhhh. I kept searching for danamania.com. Thanks. What are you talking about? Her site is still up.
