hey basalgangster.. you are one step ahead of me! 
I have just discovered my floppy disk set for OS7.0.1 does seem to have different installs for different Macs. I found the install for the IIfx and all seemed well, but gloom, although when swapping floppies (Install1, Install2, Tidbits, Fonts) it even says Successful Install.. but... upon reboot, it then delcares there is a problem with the install and Install may fix this, I'm currently on the 3rd install.
I'd rather not wipe the HD as there seems to be some useful applications on there such as Iomega Zip stuff and Hard Disk Toolkit from FWB Software. I'm currently back to booting from my orginal floppy (made with the same OS7.0.1 disk set) to see what can be done.
