Overclocking '040//'030 Macs 68k 6 posts Nov 27, 2010 — Nov 30, 2010
Just out of curiosity, has anyone had any success with 68k mac overclocks? Is the speed increase any good?

The only overclocked 040's I have are CPU upgrades, and they are a little faster (much faster if they have cache onboard). If you want to speed up a Quadra 040 machine try to find a Daystar cache card that fits in the PDS slot.

The IIsi is particularly amenable to overclocking due to Apple intentionally crippling it. 25MHz is easily achievable (the parts are already rated for it), and some people have pushed it up as far as 28MHz. The speed difference is noticible.

I should mod my IIsi then, you just need a new crystal?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's all that's required, but I've not done the mod myself (trag might know for sure).

Note the article on modifying the Turbo601. :-)

This page is pretty much what started my interest in hacking Macs. Back in the days before there was even an xlr8yourmac.com site...
