You mentioned that yours was bought new, did you purchase with AppleCare while at it?
Funny. The TiBooks I've owned have never died of their own accord. The last one I had, a 550 DVI, worked perfectly until I absent-mindedly used too wet a cleaning cloth, water flowed down the screen into the bezel where it promptly pwn3d the lower 3rd of my display
The only time I ever had a TiBook hinge snap on me was on this 1GHz that I got for free, it wasn't very healthy to begin with (left hinge broken, right speaker dead), and I still flexed it pretty often by using it "normally". Then, there was a loud snap one day and the right hinge gave up the ghost.
It's been in storage ever since, I don't want the LVDS cables to get mutilated, and also to use as a guinea-pigfor future hinge repair attempts
