Yea it's conceptually weird.  But in theory copyrights last way too long for the tech world.  (It's something I actually may specialize in or research heavily in law school purely out of curiosity.  It's not a workable system in the long-run.
Thomas Jefferson was against copyright on principal, but decided an author ought to be able to make some money from his/her work during his/her lifetime. If you think tech issues are overprotected, check out entertainment and literature. Vested interests/special interest groups have contorted the concept of copyrightand wrangled extensions of protection  to such extremes that the entire notion has become ludicrous over time  .  .  .
